Putting rear CAT back on for MOT

Is putting the rear CAT back on as easy as I've been lead to believe?

3 or 4 bolts to take off then a simple replacement of pipe?

I've got my MOT early next month, if I can't find a 'friendly' MOT garage I'm gonna have to put CAT2 back on temporarily.

Since it's UK dont forget the two bolts to fasten the lamda sensor to the boss plate. - don't let it take the weight of the down pipe !!!

When you do take it for it's MOT, make sure the examiner gets the engine b****d hot !!!".... otherwise it may not get within the emmision limits. (see previous posts on UK spec emmissions and MOT's)

cheers

Neil.

try and get it through without the cat , if it falls within the limits it doesnt matter if its fitted or not , they do a basic 'quick' test now which is not 'vehicle specific' in other words they do not type in your vehicle specs just put the sniffer up its bum and run a test , its worth a go for the cost of a test.

The front end, on a J-spec at least, has a support bracket that lines up with one of the bolt holes, and it can be a pain in the arse lining up two exhaust pipe ends, a gasket, and a bracket hole, while on yer back under the car, lifting the centre section pipe with one arm at an awkward angle. My advice is - use the scissors jack that comes with the car to jack the centre section exhaust pipe up to the correct height :)

Pardon any egg-sucking/granny-teaching issues.

Don't think that applies for a UK spec car. :(

it did today, forgot to mention i hold a testing license but before you ask im not currently testing but my workshop is attached to an MOT station , basically if a car passes the 'quick' emisions test they dont do the really thorough one which involves putting the probes etc in and typing the specific vehicle details , i will let you know when i test mine as i will put it on the machine before and after it is de-catted , but this will be a few weeks away.

John

PS i actually said to my mate when he tested my BMW 'so if a car that should have a cat passes the emision test without one its ok , and the answer was yes thats fine .

just to clarify the situation , ive asked my MOT station owning mate who i rent my workshop from the score about this . If a car can pass its emission test it doesnt matter if its fitted with a cat or not , having a cat is not part of the MOT but meeting emision limits is , he did say a 96 on car would have a lot of trouble getting under the limits without a cat but a pre 96 would have a good chance because the limits are much stricter post 96 .

There has been much discussion on this issue in the past, if you do a search you should find a half hours worth of reading. If I remember correctly, most cars will get through with one cat, if its the rear one it must be warm. Some UK cars have got very close to the limit on the fail side with no cats.

DON'T FORGET...

If the MOT station offers a 'FREE'-retest, that applies to the

emmision test as well (garage discression !), then doesn't matter

if it fails first time anyway - almost worth a go just to see...?

[apart from having to re-book retest, that is]

I thought the J-Spec engine code was 1 letter/number different

from UK ? ? IF SO they CANNOT match it in the computer.....

it will NOT list any other than the UK engine code.
