Mike
what processor / speed is your PC your streaming it from? My PC is well old... I don't even know.. it works fine for any other type of file (I use it a lot to stream). It's just this file type baffles the XBox. I thought it was because it was a Realplayer file type or something?
caseys
MKV files are awkward to re-encode as you have to demux them first, I don't believe there are any programs that do it in one hit Try VLC first (free) at http://www.videolan.org but I think it only plays them and cannot easily convert them. or avidemux http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/ Or having looked around : Use MKVExtractGUI to extract video, audio and subtitle from MKV files. Then, you can multiplex (join) all those elements together with VirtualDubMOD. Alex
I do MKV2VOB for converting MKV's to play on most things.
Scott
I do MKV2VOB for converting MKV's to play on most things. Thats how I do it for the PS3. Works a treat. A vob file is just an MPEG2 file so most things should be fine with it. You can even rename it if it helps the recognition.

Alex
http://www.mkv2vob.com/showthread.php?tid=1 Just a word of warning, if you want to keep full HD levels then it can take ages to convert, but the conversion is very good. Like Scott I use it for the PS3. Full 1080p playback - lovely.

It outputs AVI files nicely, but I haven't had a problem with it taking too long a time to build the files.

CJ
Well, I tried MKVtoVOB and it wasn't a success for me. My Trekstor HD still didnt like the file format despite trying the convertor in auto mode ad converting to AVI. Methinks I will have to try other settings later. I never use any other video setting. AVI have different audio and video, it is just a container, your player probably won't have been compatible with the codec used. I "think" it was a VOB file I converted to when I chose the auto setting but my HD thingy wouldn't accept that either. TBH, it was late last night when I was playing about with it and I may not have done something correctly. I will have another go tomorrow as I am not working tomorrow night so will have more time. MrRalphMan
I have a file at home that I used to split a 10GB Bluray rip into three then convert to AVI so my Bluray player could read them. Are you sure your box will handle HD source material? If it doesn't then you'll have to convert the file to another resolution as well. Let me know and I'll try to dig the file out tonight. The tech data on the site says: # Playback functions # Playable video formats: MPEG-1, MPEG-2 (DVD), MPEG-4 (AVI: DivX3/5, Xvid) # Suitable for HDTV (scaled to 720p and 1080i via component output) # Playable audio formats: MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG # Picture viewer for showing pictures in JPEG format # Folder navigation # Use and edit your own playlist So that would suggest HD is OK? MrRalphMan
Not from that, it seems that it is only upscaling the video.. Might be that it cannot play the video in it's current resolution. What model is it exactly?
