Anyone see the Basingstoke traffic chaos on TV?

I've just worked a "12 hour" nightshift in Basingstoke. I've never seen traffic congestion like it. All the roundabouts around Basingstoke were almost totally gridlocked.

My journey to work from near Portsmouth to Basingstoke usually takes me ~45 mins. Today (well last night, still feels like the same day to me) it took me 5½ bloody hours.

OK, so it had been snowing a bit - big deal. Drive accordingly FFS - that doesnt mean drive at 3 mph on the M3 motorway, you knobheads.

Honestly, I reckon I could've got to work in 1½ hours, rather than 5½, if people drove sensibly, rather than just going everywhere in first gear.

My drive in is basically 30 miles west towards Southampton then 25 miles north to Basingstoke - this took me 5½ hours. My colleague who lives in Southampton took 6 hours to get to work ... in a Shogun !

Mad, isn't it? I bet it wasn't the snow that caused you to take 6 hours though, it was all the overly-cautious people driving ridiculously slowly - right?

We wernt even moving half the time, then everyone tried getting over the roundabout when the 2 lanes form into 1, couldnt be bothered to wait for that so went the wrong way round the roundabout (small roundabout and no oncoming traffic may i add) proberly saved about 20 minutes

I cant believe the amount of people i saw using full throttle to move in the ice thinking it would work

Over 5 hours. :(

I'm supposed to be going to Hedge End around 11.00am. Do you reckon it'll be as bad Jake?

No, it's fine now Andy. I've just gone 55 miles from Basingstoke (M3 > M27, past Hedge End, to Portsmouth then Waterlooville on the A3M) to Waterlooville in 65 mins. It shouldn't take you hardly any more time than usual now, the motorways are just wet now.

Cheers Jake. That's a load off.

Drifting down motorways with a 77 year old in the next seat may have the wrong outcome.

Pathetic, isnt it. I bet they dont have these problems up north or in Scotchland.

:amen: All weekend the peace around here was shattered by the sound of people flooring it to try and get up the gentle slope out the car park, somehow thinking that having already lost grip, more power would get it back :conf: It's no wonder other, more wintery countries laugh at us, it's pathetic.

My other half took 7 hours to drive home last night... a distance of 20 miles. :(

I can only assume the traffic chaos was down to an accident on the M3 J6 sliproad which then backed everything else up, probably coupled with other minor accidents at various key junctions around town.

its going to take my brother a while to do 300 miles home from basingstoke to the north east then :)

The issue in Reading was the exit roads from town weren't gritted so a load of traffic came in and got stuck there.

I know there was a lot of snow but on busy routes this wasn't given a chance to settle, and the lack of gritting meant the little snow that was there from before turned to sheet ice.

On a cool note though, saw an AA guy giving it beans on a quad bike. Looked like great fun.

Yesterday I left London at 2.45pm and got home in Basingstoke at 11.30pm, only reason I got home then is because I ditched car as soon as I got off M3 at junction 7 and walked 2 mile home. Junction 6 was shut because a van skidded and hit the traffic lights at the bottom of the slip road according to the radio. So they closed off that slip road and everyone had to get off at junction 7 causing massive tailbacks :(
