tomgeer
Fuel filter? I'm only saying that because a diesel compressor we have at work turns over slowly and won't start when the filter needs changed

absz
if its not turning over quick enough in the cold weather due to a lazy starter motor then it will not start, try tow starting it.

movistar
valve clearances could be too tight(they close up over time)the valves rise up slightly into the head, closing the valve clearance gap...this was quite a common fault years ago. Should be part of every major service but most people dont check them!! Just a case of re-shimming the tappets, quite an easy job if your in the know. Scott
I had the 2.2 TDi engine. Exactly the same thing happened with me. Was getting a bit of a pig to start but after that it was fine. Turned out to be the valve seals AFAIK.
