jonathanc
Right chaps, I have iTunes with tons of songs on my PC. Recently, I have installed a Windows Home Server on a knackered PC I found. Runs great and all but I would also love to share all the songs I paid for from the server, so I can access it from my other PCs at home. I tried changing the itunes media folder to a folder I created on the server but that does nothing Any advice welcomed!
Ric
you can share itunes librarys over your network using Home share which is a feature built in the new itunes. can be applied to 5 machines with your store login details http://www.apple.com/support/ilife/tutorials/itunes/it6-1.html

For example, if my library is in PC1 and I want to listen to it in PC2 I would need PC1 to be switched on. If somehow I can get it to sync to the Windows Home Server (which is always on) I can access it on PC2 even if PC1 if off. Just wondering if that's possible... Pixelfill
The way I did it was to copy all the tunes and the Itunes index to the windows home server shared folder, then when starting up Itunes for the first time, you need to press shift while clicking itunes to browse to the index file. If you are lucky then it'll all just work from then on, if not you'll need to rebuild your library by pointing at the WHS share, this may take a while, but when it's done it works fine. You don't need to install Itunes on the WHS but you do need to install bonjour. Mike
jonathanc
Right, I managed to find a simple solution for those interested in things like this I modified the latest iTunes (9.0.1) so that I can install it on WHS using this guide : http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/09/11/help-key-install-itunes-9-on-windows-home-server/ After I got iTunes installed on WHS i authorised it and setup Home Sharing. I also setup home sharing on my other 2 PCs (which both have their own itunes libraries). After that I copy from both those PCs to the server so now I have both the libraries from two of my PCs on my server. The thing is I would have to authorise WHS and also keep logged in with iTunes open to enable Home Sharing. I think thats ok since I just have to fire up a Remote Desktop Connection to my WHS ( I create another account to install 3rd party software as extra protection ) and then fire up iTunes. I can then listen to the music from any PC that is authorised There's another more complicated solution that if setup properly would mean that you can listen to your itunes tunes wherever there's an internet access as long as your WHS is up and running. For the time being Iam happy with this solution but I will look into that in the future.
