My first migraine

No it's not a new idea for an evil kids toy!

At least I'm assuming it's a migraine, I've never had one before, it must be a mild one from what other people have said!

Either that or I've got a brain tumor.

Started as blurry vision, mostly on the left side, not in any particular eye. That went away after about half hour and then I started getting a headache. I took some paracetamol which did f*ck all.

Now it's a dull ache behind my right eye. Not a hugely bad headache but I feel like I don't want to stand up or move, can't concentrate on anything. Also feeling slightly sick. Had it about 2 hours so far. Bit of light sensitivity but OK with sound - I do wish we could turn the lights off though.

Trouble is I'm at work, got a lift this morning cos my car is in the garage, not looking forward to walking round there to pick it up, just hoping it gets a bit better before it's time to leave. I've just spent another 20 mins in the loo holding my head and with my eyes closed.

Yep, it's a migraine..

I usually start with tunnel vision (no peripheral vision at all) and then the headache comes.

I would go home and lie down.. it'll just get worse if you carry on at work. Wear sunglasses  to cope with the light sensitivity.. and as others have said get some Migraleve from the chemist on the way home.

Lack of sleep and too much coffee is usually my trigger.

Drink plenty of water too :)

Do you wear glasses? Reason I say that as it is normally related to sight. My mother use to get a load of migraines & this all stopped when she had an eye test & was advised she needed glasses. Now when she gets them she just puts them on and they normally go away after 10-15 mins.

Missus also has problems with eyes & noticed it more when she was prescribed the wrong sight eye contacts. Once corrected she had less headaches but still gets them, I put it down to eyesight.

I went to a opticians for the first time after working in IT for over 7 years. My eye sight I believe is very good but was pretty shocked to find that I could need glasses for seeing things more in detail from further away (basically the last 2 lines of letters were fuzzy).

If you haven't might be worth paying a visit?

Mate's just given me a 400mg Ibuprofen, not a migraleve though, we'll see if that helps.

At least I'm relatively OK looking at my screen, I've turned it down quite a bit though.

Arent Ibuprofen mor fom muscle/body aches i dont bother with them as they dont do anything for me.

Pink Migraleve tablets shoud sort you out but if it doesnt move on to the yellows and prepare to go to sleep

I really do need to get my eyes tested, I get dizzy/sicky if I'm sitting too far from a screen like in an auditorium or something, probably related.

My symptoms seem to be lessening, not so sicky now and got a bit more enthusiasm, just got a bit of dull head remaining.

Migraleve is an Ibuprofen. It's an anti-inflamatry rather than just a pain reliever, and migraines are caused by inflamed blood vessels I think.

the Ibuprofen I got was a pink one anyway. :D

My missus used to suffer terribly from this (2-3 “attacks” a week), trough several years. She tried all possible means and masseurs to get rid of it (massages by the truckload in all forms, acupuncture ect) she even went to the leading Danish headache Clinique and tried a number of preventive medicines. Nothing really worked. Finally we found a clinique with a very special for of treatment combining several treatment forms that I cant name in English (but no medicine). When she went home from the first 2 hours treatment she was without migraine for 3 weeks in a row!

Since then she’s had 5 treatments and her migraine is now down to one “attack” every 2-3 months. Even though it’s about a year since she had her last treatment.

The “concept” is called Body Self Development(I know it sounds very “alternative”) and you can read about it here: http://www.body-sds.dk/home.6 One of the founders is by the way hired by the professional cycling team CSC and treats the bikers on the Tour de France.

One the downside, I’m not sure it’s available outside Denmark, but you could give them a ring ask….mind the site does come in english so who knows. That said, a plane ticket from London to Copenhagen is about 50-100 pounds return. A small investment in a good health :-)

My wife gets them alot, I told her to get on with it and stop been so soft.

The other week I had my first one, god did it hurt I now don't say anything to the missus.

That's it.. for non-sufferers they think it's just a 'big' headache... it's actually more akin to a brain tumour!?

It can be stress related as i used to get loads and even passed out once in my local chippys and ambulance took me to hospital.

Are u sure u are not stressing/worrying too much?...especially this tie of year!

Thought i was getting migranies and had a sick feeling as well a a nasty taste in my mouth and yes very sensitive too light.

I have been fine for the last year now but was getting 4-5 attacks a day and would wake up from my sleep in severe pain like my head was about to blow off!

If u dont get it treated quickly it can start to cause anxiety and panic attacks as you will be worrying all the time about doing normal thing(driving/banks/shops etc) and getting a migraine outside the security of your own home.

The symptoms you described in the 1st post are exactly the same as i used to get before getting glasses/contacts etc.

Get your eyes checked!

The blury vision can be dangerous if your driving and i have to pull over and wait it out of im on the road. As soon as you get the blury eyes dose up with what ever pain killers you have and that will help.

I use a couple of co-codamol or co-dydramol with a couple large iburofen as it makes me feel sick otherwise but it does put me on my arse for a few hours but the world is then a better place :D

But take the amount what ever you have been prescribed.

I used to get them in my late teens. One a week. Nasty things, would last all day. Then one day, I stopped getting them. Haven't had one for 9 years now :)

Same here, just suddenly stopped. The Migraleve tablets used to make me violently sick.I used to have a headache for a few days after the migrane.Nasty.

I've been having panic attacks for the last year or 2, from a fear of humiliation resulting in fear of passing out, resulting in feeling like I'm going to pass out! Getting much better now though I'm fighting through it, I don't get attacks anywhere near as much now and they go pretty quickly, but I did wonder if this migraine would cause them to return.

I had blurry vision once whilst driving before, very mild and didn't result in a headache. That was a good few months ago though.

Mate the best thing to do is distract yourself from this thought and keep yourself busy.

If u start thinking like what u just said, it can become a viscous cycle because u will constantly be worrying about these issues and even when your doing something your subconsious will be thinking about it.

It can be very hard to switch off even when sleeping and u will find that relaxtion techniques and tapes will help u a lot.

Pain killers are to treat the pain and not the actual cause which u need to see a counseller through your GP.

I had it for a couple years and trying different medicines wouldn't work but honestly counselling is what teaches u how your body works and about chemical imbalance's.

I did not have a clue that my body/mind was working in such a way and once u learn this it will be alot easier to deal with because u know what is causing such headaches/anxiety/panic attacks.

Do a search on the net under panic attack or anxiety and u will find their are many different forms and u need to recognise which one affects u.

E.g.....social anxiety.......fear of being in public/social places and then theirs another where people have a fear of being in a large open place etc.

Loads of self help info out their mate.....get reading!

I've been on nomorepanic forums for a while and it's great to just read through old threads and see so many people having the same problems, that helped a lot in itself. The missus is also very helpful with it all. My doctor didn't help much at all just put me through loads of tests to make sure it wasn't anything physical - and me being white coat hypertensive just made me feel like crap!!

I've read up quite a lot on how it's to do with fight or flight responses and things like getting hot/cold sweats were a way to help you slip out of the grasp of an attacker etc. It all makes you see it differently when it happens, so I have been using breathing techniques and bits to help me too and it all seems to be working.

I keep saying to myself "stupid brain, why don't you do as I say!" :D
