Supra Vs RX7

Always been a fan of the 2 above cars, in fact it was a very close call when getting the supra. What does everyone think of the REX's as im seriously thinking of getting one. Im aware of the engine probs they have around the 60k mark but the one im looking at, despite being a J reg, had a rebuild approx 9k miles ago.

How do they fair in BPU form compared to a BPU TT supra. Is there anything else that i should be wary of/look out for?

cheers guys and gals.

More sports than GT car. Less luxurious for sure.. they drink fuel and oil heavily and are noisey compared with the Supra. They go well and handle very well. My brother has one so I have good knowledge of them and their 'issues'.

I've never driven a Rex but have been a passenger in a few. They're quite a different car to the Supra, the handling seems to be very precise and the car is more chuckable. Its a lot lighter than the supra and seems to handle rough corners better. The cars I've been in don't have the straight line speed or power the Supra has, but they're a fantastic fun car to be in.

IMO they're one of the few other jap cars that give the 'supercar' feel the Supra does...

Great cars, looks and performance wise.

My little bro had a TT and he got rid of it because he was seing a fuel return of 14 MPG 'yikes', and that was with his missus driving.

Good luck.

edit: It was comparable to my Supe with both cars standard. Sounded nice too!

For what it's worth, a Rex probably performs much like a Supra in terms of consumption...

Drive it soft, and it will give you an average return for your over-priced, tax-induced Super unleaded.

Drive it like Schumacher on a bad hair day, and it will eat up your wallet, and spit out your credit cards with no remorse!

Im positive I could average 20mpg at least from my RX, and thats with around 70% sensible driving, 30% not-so-legal driving!

Hi the average fuel economy you will get out of the 13B engine (654cc x 2 rotors) is approximately 17mpg.

Although they are lighter cars and have a smaller engine you must not consider the rotary engine as the same as a reciprocating engine.

They have no valves, therefore the ports are constantly open and this is why they are a little heavy on fuel.

The engine uses a little oil (approx 0.5L per 1000 miles) as the oil is used in the engine, both as a lubricant and cooling - a little blue smoke when warm is expected, not plumes of it indicating a worn turbo.

You must also consider that the 13B engine is virtually identical to the earlier 12A engine (apart from larger rotors and housings) the 12A pushed out 110bhp, the 13B twin entry turbo is 250+bhp - thats a lot more, the fact that the rebuild has been done should not be used as evidence that the engine is ok, run a compression test, the difference between the front a rear rotor housings should be within 5% of each other +/-.

The engines are noisy, but not excessively.

As for handling, round bends the 7 will wup a supra no problems, but the 7 produces its power above 4000rpm so the Supra will begin to gain on mid-range grunt. Top speed in stock form will be very similar, the Supra slightly faster.

Bear in mind that the great 7 tuners, Racing beat hold the record of the RX7 FD top speed of somewhere around 230+mph.

Parts for the 7 FD are cheap on ebay in the states!

Most people who are serious about tuning the 7, go single!

Hope this helps a little in your quest, odd really I have gone from a 7 to a Supra and love the comfort of the "big gal". :eyebrows:

I have heard from people to stay away from the quirky rotary engine.......always going wrong, and is a bitch to start at times....always flooding (I could have been mislead though as I dont know a great deal about these cars as say Jurgen would ;) ).....I have heard of people that have gone through 2-3 engines in one year........but on the plus side great looks, light as f*ck and little rockets on the quite

just take your time in finding a good one if your considering it

Repost: sorry, put this in the old thread on accident:

I've owned a 1st-gen and 2nd-gen RX, and I loved them both. Always wanted a 3rd-gen. Like CW said, sometimes start up was rough and you had to tinker a bit, but I've never owned a car that was such a virtual smile-factory like the RX. Had a skyline in Okinawa and then the Supe fell into my lap via marriage *bonus*. The rotary begs to be revved, screams when it does, and the car was incredibly easy to drive sideways. I had a buddy in Okinawa making 700 RWHP (single) with one in Okinawa. He'd wax-@ss on most anything on the island and even made the young guys drifting look bad. When I was stationed in Oklahoma, we used to frequent a dragstrip called Thunder Alley. Back in my civic days (hey, everybody has to learn somewhere). There was an event held there with a Puerto Rican team running a heavily modded 2-stroke rotary in a stretched Red RX-3 (I think) on a big shot of juice. Car was red with a mexican name like "little pepe" or "chalupa" or something or other. I recall it running an 8.30-ish quarter! just a testament of the insane power that little motor can make in such a light car. Shocked everybody.

AT FIRST: sorry for bad english and spelling mistakes :rtfm:

I've drove both... RX-7 FD3S and a MKIV !!

I really like both cars. And every car is a beauty for its one.

Difference:

The MKIV is a GT Car. This car is a highway killer. Top Speed is the best discipline. You can drive every day with the car and have enough luxury.

The RX-7 is a absolute Sports Car. This car is a road and motorbike killer. The RX-7's home is the track. The RX-7 have a very low balance point. It's a really FUN-CAR and my opinion is: It's no and never a daily driven car.

Engine:

The MKIV Engine is the most better one. Rare engine damage, but if you have one, you should have a much of money. A little bit economy fuel usage, easy to tune for 400HP and more, no temperature problems. Much more lag at acceleration, typical Pistons Engine torque.

RX-7 engine is a little bit more poisonous, engine damages are not a rarity, but a complete engine rebuild costs not more the 2500 and you have really fun for the next 60.000 - 80.000 miles. Much fuel usage, much temperatur problems. The Twin-Turbo System with a rotary engine is ingenious. Torque like a dieselturbo engine and this power from 2x654ccm.

Result:

Buy both !!if you have the money.

MKIV for fast and easy daily driving and the RX-7 for fun, trackdays, quatermile etc.

My opinion at the moment:

I look at a Supra MKIV TT 6Spd but must check my finances first and sell my old daily driven BMW E36

At moment my fun car is an RX-7 FD3S with a lot of mods and i have build rather a showcar than a trackcar. I like the combination.

But if my BMW was sold i definitly buy a 6Sp MKIV TT and can be lucky with both cars. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
