dr_jekyll
its good to see an 18 year old that has ambition and is chasing the things he wants by hard work like i had to , and its good that you are getting insurance, not like the waist of skin 17 year old coke dealers down my way that drive around in ther m3s and rs4s with no tax or insurance , good on you mate. why not get something like a e46 320 it will be a hell of alot cheaper to insure , safer and you can get used to the rwd in a well balanced good looking car that still has a little bit of grunt. i had 1 when i was 17 and i lern a lot from it. i think if i had jumped straight into a supe at 18 from a fwd clapper i would have destroyed it and myself pretty quick. Sgtbash
Evening Sgtbash. What is your driving experience and cars owned to date? Up to now, all I have driven is my mums Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec and my mates 1.4l astra, both under temp insurance as I have not been in them often. I have driven my Grandads Citreon Relay with a ton of bricks in the back for a favour, thats was dodgy as hell to drive, There was so much play in the steering it was untrue and I was always stalling
Kirk
I think it was when I watched 2 Fast 2 Furious with the orange Supra that I started to want one. oh dear..... I want a car(Supra) that will make all these silly chavs cry at its awesomeness, a car(Supra) that moves(In more way than one) me and gets me motivated. thats even worse than the above quote seriously dude its a recipe for disaster if your thinking like that. 1st off you probly have no rwd experience which will have you facing the wrong way in a bush or something. Its easy to get carried away at your age trust me i know and 2nd the quote..... totaly unfeasable mate. I felt your pain, hell i tried it myself at 18 but it just wasnt possible. My advice get the idea out of your head and get something cheap and sensible to get some years behind you then try again in a few years time

Im not like that, that was me being silly (Where there is a time and a place for it)
Kirk
i didnt disregard the rest at all. I singled out the 2 most concerning points of someone of your experience and age. Im not 'attacking' you in anyway mate im just saying that realy isnt the right thing to say on here as selective people, like me, pick up on it. Ive seen countless young kids with no experience jumping into cars like this and a week later find out they have wrote it off and are in hospital. like i said mate your young, get a runabout or a nice hatchback or something and get some experience behind you

DSK
A new (ish) driver with such a hot car is not hot insurers. Its a big risk for them and the potential concequences they will have to pay for should you be involved in smash etc. Also young guys like to show of and this increases the likelyhood of a crash. As mentioned, get someting else in the meantime, I also don't see the point in having a Supra stuck in the garage. A lesson from me; It is worth driving around in whatever you can insure for the least money and buy relatively cheaply for a year or two, thus allowing you to keep your money in hand for a better vehicle down the line rather than just blow it on drivng around in something thats no faster or better than the average family saloon. CardiffSupra
To be honest I don't think new drivers should be driving these sort of cars, Just like the insurance company. You just have to wait my friend.
hmoreta
Fair enough mate, ill need to reconsider, looks like ill have to put the Supra off for a while. That sounds good mate...get some experience then supra
The-Plethora
I agree with one of the other posters, an MR2 non turbo is a good compromise but even that is a bit risky for a newish driver being RWD, either way you are going to take it up the metaphorical 'chuff' at your age I don't know what your financial situation is but could you afford to get a supra, keep it sorn to get it fixed up and get a crappy run about as well? clarky666
Bide your time and earn your stripes mate. I wouldn't have dreamed of having anything like a Supra in terms of cost or performance at that age. I was creeping around in an old 1.3 litre MKII Golf when i was 17. skim41
I must say that I find the pricing for the insurance way over the top. But sorry, if you are 18 you should not be driving cars like this. Also, take into account that you need to service it, which is not cheap also. I would say make sure to get a good job/ finish school and get a good degree and buy it a couple of years later. I bought my first real sportscar at 20-21 and had a decent job next to it, still I was struggling to get all my bills paid and drive the car next to it. Exotic, semi exotic and sports cars come at a price, and its not just the price of purchasing one.... this is not a bash mail, but my honest opinion. DSK
I agree with running costs. Whilst they are not unreliable, you will have to spend a few precious pennies to keep them in good order! You always need to think further than just simple oil changes as a service etc. The cost of the parts for a decent service will set you back a good few notes even if you do it DIY. Consider the tyres they run on, what if you get a puncture here and there.... I have 18's and am in the tyre trade. I recently had to change 1 front (245/40/18 Michelin PS2) and that was £170 to me. At your age you will chew through tyres razzing it around everywhere. Brakes are considerably more expensive than many decent cars. Some of my miscellaneous costs = 6 OEM Toyota Coil packs = £650 + connector clips at around £30 for a set + £ diagnostic charges x 2 + £ labour, £1K straight away! 3 oil changes within 3 months, each tub of oil costing around £100 with an OEM oil filter. Chewie
You know what, I've changed my mind on this one. If you've got the money, I'd say go for it. You only have one life and as long as you're a good boy on the road then fair enough. Why hell, you may even be a Lewis Hamilton clone. I've always regretted the things I didn't do than the ones I did. And if you get splattered then it's Darwins theory in action and we all benefit as another bloodline to an idiot gene pool gets disconnected. mathew
lol @ people suggesting he gets more driver experience before jumping into a supra at 18, didnt people notice his insurance quote? somehow i dont think he will be getting a supra anytime soon. tbourner
I didn't even know about Supras when I was 18, I'd had a Metro and a Rover 414 and I bought a brand new MG ZR160. Everyone told me not to and that I'd die horribly but I didn't. TBH if I had got a Supra I may well have died horribly, because even after learning in a reasonably fast FWD hatch I still had to be VERY careful in it. You do get complacent as well which is very dangerous in a car like that.
Chewie
TBH if I had got a Supra I may well have died horribly Not necessarily. In a flipside way of thinking, this reminds me of a group of skool kidz I heard yakking as they walked past my Supra. "If I was to get run over I hope it's a Supra." hoff
I would see what quote you get for a UK TT. NA and TT imports usually have very similar quotes as they are indeed imports. UK (TT only) cars are usually quoted less then an NA (import only).
