Transit Connect gearbox query

Hi,

Yesterday I had a problem with my van, a Transit Connect. Started it as normal, the gearstick moved from side to side but it would not move into any gear, wouldn’t even budge forward or back, almost like it was frozen solid, the clutch operation was normal. I had to leave it running for 3 hours before I could finally move the gear stick and it was quite ‘solid’ to drive for a few miles after that. Now it was very cold yesterday morning, in the vw golf it said it was -8, quite how accurate that was im not sure.

This morning it was fine but I left it half hanging out the garage just incase.

Anyone have any ideas what happened? As far as im aware gearbox oil doesn’t freeze?

Does anyone have any 'useful' contacts at Ford that i could get some info from please?

Gearbox was totally frozen again this morning and undriveable. Ive contacted Ford in Reading and given them the information i found on the net, which was...

Ford Transit 2000 - 2003 front wheel drive manual gearbox VXT-75

Problem: The gear lever is very difficult to move.

Solution: A common problem is water ingress causing the upper bearing of the selector mechanism to become corroded. A dislodged vent hose or damaged seal for the upper bearing is the problem. A revised inner selector mechanism and revised transmission vent hose (made of ozone resistant material) should be fitted.

I was trying to get part numbers from them to get the bits and get my mechanic to fix, however they would not give me any part numbers and said i had to bring the van to them to diagnose and fix. My simple answer to this was, the gearbox is frozen, how do i bring it to you? She wasnt interested and generally implied to bring it down on a warmer day!

Just want to speak with someone a tad more knowledgeable at Ford and be able to buy what the common parts are to fix this.

Any help much appreciated

The ford gearbox has very thin oil, are you sure its got the correct transmission grade oil ? if not that WILL cause problems in selecting gear when transmission is cold. first thing i will do in this situation is change the oil using ford oil only.

Thanks mate, Oil is fine, has been checked in that it is topped up correctly and was last serviced by Ford. Van was left running from 6pm last night till 11pm and it was still frozen. Its been running since 7am today and was still fozen 20 mins ago. Need to get it running to take to my mechanic but it doesnt look possible in this weather, am trying to arrange another guy to come to me today.

Ive got a funny feeling its the cables that control the side to side and up/down motion that have corroded and letting moisture in and freezing. Hope so anyway
