Guest jackfrosty
I have a problem with my Mk4 Japanese Supra. Please Help! The following stopped working while driving: Dials (speedo, rev counter, odo etc), Electric windows, Reversing light, Heated rear screen. I narrowed it down the a 10 amp fuse in the footwell, but after replacing it it blew again after about a minute of further driving. Don't know if it's linked but I removed the dash a month ago to replace the stereo. The stereo has continued to work fine the whole time though. Please help! Any suggestions of where to look would be greatly appreciated.
Pig
Have you used it much since you took the dash out and put it back together? You may find that the fuse blows when you use the indicator or hazards? In which case you may well have plugged the wrong plug into the hazards light. Its very easy to do as the plug fits, take the hazard switch out and look for the correct plug and try again. also, try looking through this thread http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=141049&highlight=dash Edited December 12, 2009 by Pig (see edit history)
Guest jackfrosty
Yes, I have used it lots since I took the dash out. Also, nothing in particular made the fuse blow, as far as I can tell. Just driving along, not switching anything on or off, and suddenly all the dials drop to the bottom. Thanks for the reply
Pig
Oh, have you definatly got the right amp fuse in? I see no reason for it to blow when just driving straight. It could prehaps be a loose wire shorting out somewhere?
Guest jackfrosty
Yes, 10 amp fuse, like it says in the handbook and the fusebox cover. If it's a loose wire, I've got no idea where to start looking. Any ideas would be appreciated! Cheers
Pig
sorry, im stumped from here on in. unless its related to the heat that the new stereo is producing. Whip that out and go for a drive. (process of elimination)
L18msy
Have you maybe 'nipped' a wire putting it back together. It sounds as if the wire might be shorting out somewhere.
devan
Yeah i would suggest tracing through as much wiring as you can from the fusebox upto the dash, and around the dash area/stereo to make sure its all flowing freely. I know theres a lot, but you could easily find a trapped wire.
Guest jackfrosty
Thanks for the suggestions. I've got the dash out, but not the dials. I didn't remove the dials before. Think it's worth taking the dials out too? What a nightmare!
Guest jackfrosty
Thanks for the help, I've taken the dials out and found some burnt bits of circuit on the back. Could that be what's caused the fuses to blow and the dials to stop working? I guess it's caused by the KMH/MPH converter. I guess I'll try and solder it back together. Any advice would be appreciated! Cheers http://www.jack-frost.co.uk/test/burnt.jpg
Guest jackfrosty
Ok, in case anyone's interested, I've fixed it. I soldered wires replacing the burnt out bits of circuit and put it back together. Just taken it for a thrash with everything switched on and it seems ok... Fingers crossed! devan
I also had burnt out tracks on the rear of my dial cluster, although instead of blowing a fuse, they just burnt out. It was one of the tracks for the negative dial lights. I turned the lights off when i saw smoke coming out of the dials lol.
Pig
Good on you for finding that. Jon
Guest jackfrosty
Why do you think it burnt the circuit? Do you think it will burn out again?
devan
Mine burnt because i was making up some blue LED's in stock bulb holders for the indicators, and when inserting them into the hole, i pressed the neg and pos together without realising, and they shorted and melted the track lol. Soon sorted though.
