ManwithSupra
Hello all I wonder if anyone can help me really I got a 2006 Focus MK2 1.8TDCI as my second car which i use for work. Coming back from a few days away with my wife, got within 1 mile of home and got an error message saying "engine system failure" the battery light came on and the ABS light was flashing, as we got closer to home the lights were dimming and the instrument cluster was switching on and off, then as we got onto the parking area the engine switched off. It sounds to me as if the alternator has had it, as if you kept the revs high the problem went away (engine warning lights went away, lights came back on etc) i tried starting it again but i am getting the dreaded starting clicks How much am i looking at to get an alternator replaced do you reckon? scotty71
Definately sounds like the alternater, as you kept driving you were running on battery power alone which would eventually die thus resulting in the dimming headlights and the battery light coming on. Have you looked at the alternater belt?? If thats gone you would get the same symtoms and the battery would just run out of juice hence the warning lights ABS and the eventual failure to start. Look at the belt if thats ok price up an alternater, most motor factors sell them on an exchange basis. Not the hardest job to do but depends on if you can do that sort of thing yourself. Would save the labour cost at a garage but its not a long job. Scotty
