garethrees
Hi, I have a manual TT 96 spec, and the gear change first thing in the morning (when cold) is sticky. i.e. Does not seam to want to change from 1st to 2nd smoothly. (Like the sync is out.) The rest of the gears are fine. Once it's warm the change is perfect. Has anyone else had this problem? I've spoken to the local dealer, and they told me to use a bit more force. So I do.. LOL.

adi
It seems virtually all toyota manual boxes suffer from this.. the mk3 did it and even my old mans 99 avensis does it. You could try redline MT90 fluid , as this often does wonders for the problem.

Steve W
You could do like they do in Siberia.... light a fire under your gearbox in the morning to warm it up a bit.

adi
aaahh i never knew that..doesnt the mkiv manual use normal synthetic gearoil? Ie compatible with redline?
Syed Shah
Well, it was used over in the US a while ago, and it worked well, making the box much less agricultural. But then the gearbox seals went on the cars using it, and with the Getrag being a non-servicable part So I think the Toyota fluid is the genaral concensus now. Sorry Adi, but this is a mega big no,no with the V160 box. Have a look at some of the docs on MKIV.com and you will see why. As Syed said, this can be very expensive. I would reccomend Gareth changes his fluid incase it hasn't been done for a while. You must use the proper V160 fluid from a Toyota dealer. adi
yep i realised after Syeds post and read up that its a big no-no. Redline normally compensate for any type of gear oil by adding another one to their range, im suprised they havent done this already.. Whats special about V160? garethrees
Thanks every one, I wanted a bit of a second opinion, was not sure if it was just my box or what. I'll get toyota to change the oil next time the cars in.
