Lcd or plasma pros and cons

Not all channels on sky HD are HD.
Really? What are they then, if they aren't HD?

Which ones do you mean ?

I've had a Hitachi 42" plasma for four years (makes me want to cry when I think of how much it cost back then,
Yeah. My 37" JVC LCD cost over £1700 new in 2005. ( I didn't buy it new, I bought it off Gamer from here but it was only like 3 months old). I imagine a 42" plasma was even more than that.

I even found out literally last week that it will support 1080i even though screens were not even branded as "HD ready" or HD anything back then.
I think they were. Mine was anyway.

However I'm getting very very VERY tempted to fork out for a low-end 50" full 1080p screen for when I start to get some HD sources (or which I have none yet - not even my DVD player). I do however use it as a PC monitor, so the 1920x1080 resolution will be great
I use my Panasonic plasma as a monitor quite often, it's excellent. With a Gyration mouse and/or keyboard it's brilliant for playing poker online and still being able move around the house. I can see the screen from my kitchen and even from outside the back door when going for a smoke. So much better than having to dash back to the PC screen when it's your turn to play.

FWIW I'm a plasma fanboi. Mine has given such excellent service and picture quality (alibeit from purely SD sources) that I wouldn't hesitate in getting another. I like the idea that LCDs run cooler and quieter (my plasma has a mah-oosive cooling fan in it), but I don't like the image streaking that you get from LCD. I also can't justify the extra cost over an equivalent plasma. LED TVs look great in the shops when you see them from the side, but I tend to look at my screen from the front
I know what you mean about LCDs but Plasmas look fine from any angle, don't they? Mine does anyway.

Only about 4-10 Virgin channels are HD. Presume its more or less the same for sky.

Seems Sky HD is superior to Virgin media HD (despite their claims that Virgin's is better). Which is very strange given Virgin's media comes from a cable, you'd expect it to be better quality but its not.

I thought you were saying that some channels advertised as HD are not actually. I didn't realise you were just saying that not every channel on Sky is in HD.

Obviously (?) only the HD channels are in HD.

ie Sky Sports 1 HD is in HD, Sky Sports 1 isn't.

BBC HD is in HD, BBC1 isn't.

I have a 42" Hitachi plasma for about 5 or 6 years now. I use a 1080i scaler and use component inputs. Have to say the picture is nice, easy to watch for long spaces of time but not as good as my old mans new 42" Hitachi plasma.

I am happy to stick with plasma, but reflections can spoil the pleasure.

My experience is LCD is overbright background scenes and not as natural looking, but thats just my experience.

ive got a 50inch samsung (720 not 1080)plasma in my lounge, had it for about a year now and more than happy with the way it performs and looks (switched on or off)

the folks have just bought a 42 alba 1080 lcd for £530 iirc from argos. i wasnt expecting much from it but was pretty impressed with what they got for the price.

both myself and the parents upgraded from your average crt tv so any tv was gona be an improvement.

If you need the screen for sports or high motion(action movies) get a Plasma, LCD's cannot handel motion as good, image appears distored

For a Plasma a full HD is only worth while 50" and up in screen size to get the beneifit of 1080P

1080i(1920x1080 pixels) is interlaced (screen refresh every second or odd line of pixels) HD Ready

1080p(1920x1080 pixels) is progessive scan (screen refreshs every line)Full HD

The best Plasma is the Pioneer Kuro 9th series range, now discontinued due to hugh losses for Pioneer but you can still pick one up while stocks last(LX5090 is the model I have), I reserached this for 6 months while saving and time and time again the Pioneer Kuro Model always was Number 1

Next on the list is Panasonic, it is rumored all new Pioneer Tv's will contain Panasonic Panels

Both Pioneer and Panasonic have 5 year warranty, if you are getting a plasma get a Panasonic or Pioneer

Good place, seem to have good prices

If you look at any of the high end AV specialists, they only deal with Pioneer or Panasonic

My only negatives with my 4 year old Philips 42" plasma is the heat therefore the cost of running it, and it sometimes makes a pixelated effect when displaying subtle tones of smoke, and or flesh tones.

Quite annoying as I enjoy watching close-ups of nudes smoking crack.

I have a Panasonic 32 lcd... blah blah i forget the specs..its a 720p one

For me.. well, within my price ranges, there are only 2... Sony or Panasonic.

Of comparable prices.. I have seen many other makes round various friends homes..and I never feel they are as good as my Panny..

Panny 50" Viera Full 1080p PLASMA here. Fantastic TV and I would never go for anything else since. Owned Sony, samsung, LG etc and they are all good, but not quite as.

I don't like the blacks on LCDs and the fact that even with the massive improvement in viewing angles you still only get the best picture if sat in the right place.

With the video processing on the Panny sets, SD material also looks good. Trouble is when you buy a cheaper HD telly is that you usually sacrifice a good quality video processor. (not usually an issue if all you do is feed it a HDMI/DVI signal though)

Don't forget, it doesn't matter how good the panel is, it's only as good as the picture you sent to it ;)

They say that for larger than 37" you should go for plasma. Not sure why really.

Because they just don't do plasma panels smaller than that!

What about the new LED TVs? Or don't they go that big?

These "LED" TV's are still normal LCD TV's... just with a fancier backlight. They still have the same problems as other LCD TV's. They're an improvement, but certainly not the future.

Is it me or does a decent CRT display better images than some LCD\Plasma screen TV's?

For the most part yeah! None of the problems with "native resolution" with computer monitors either. Don't fancy a 50" CRT though! :D

Plasma, without a doubt.
