Lcd or plasma pros and cons

I've decided my old dinosaur of a tv has to go to be replaced by something sleek and modern. So I'm going out in the sales after xmas looking for a 37- 42" tv.

So do I go for an lcd or plasma screen? What are the good/bad point of each. Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Tony

They say that for larger than 37" you should go for plasma. Not sure why really.

I have a 37" JVC LCD and a 50" Panasonic plasma. Both good quality sets with great reviews at the time they were bought.

The JVC LCD generally looks nicer but it's not good for sports or other fast moving images. The picture is like smeared, if you know what I mean.

One thing I will say which you never see mentioned, is that LCDs don't suffer from reflected light on the screen, from a window or electric light. Plasmas do, and I find that a bit annoying.

In my opinion you should only be looking at LCD with FULL HD (1080p / 24p) - not HD Ready (1080i) screens - preferably a high contrast ratio (higher the better). LED's are the future but too expensive right now and I understand they don't have a particularly long lifetime (though this may have changed) - good time to buy LCD I think.

LG make some great ones...

Why? Some people have no need or desire for HD TV/Blueray/HD Consoles. What would be the point of having a full HD screen if you never use its capabilities?

What I mean is, for some people a great performing SD TV would be a better choice than spending a load of cash on a set which can display a high res but will never be asked to do so. From what I've read, a lot of HD TVs don't make good SD TVs

both my brothers have just bought the lg ps3000 50" plasma from dixons for £649 i think it was - full hd and the picture is superb on the ps3 and sky HD

nice price.

As jake said i dont know how good the 1080p is for SD though??

Not everyone has HD Sky etc so maybe a waste??

Is it me or does a decent CRT display better images than some LCD\Plasma screen TV's?

My brother has a Sony Wega CRT in his room (32") and I've noticed it plays SKY TV in better crisper\cleaner image than a lot of LCD\Plasma screen TV's my friends have. I think people have just thought..."Oh this is new, must be good...I'll buy it".

Friend of mine has the new LCD TV & it is very very slim, he paid a lot for it but its pretty big (bigger than his room) but he wanted to be one of the first people to get them. The quality does seem better than most LCD's\Plasma's. Though he was not happy when I told him OLED technology should be out on the market soon.

Its all that marketing hype that people often get suckered into....

True, hence why I still have a 42" rear projector TV which I brought 7 years ago. Think it is giving up the ghost slowly so will be looking for a replacement so this thread is great. I don't do the hype & will not be following some of my friends who like to boast about how big their's is.

I remember some comedian (I think Jimmy Carr) saying you can tell who is a Chav because their TV is bigger than there living room! :D

We have a Sony 42" rear projector TV (in one of our living rooms :D) which is ten years old and still superb.

I've had a Hitachi 42" plasma for four years (makes me want to cry when I think of how much it cost back then, but - hey - I was re-mortgaging the house so what the hell :) ). It still working fine. I even found out literally last week that it will support 1080i even though screens were not even branded as "HD ready" or HD anything back then.

However I'm getting very very VERY tempted to fork out for a low-end 50" full 1080p screen for when I start to get some HD sources (or which I have none yet - not even my DVD player). I do however use it as a PC monitor, so the 1920x1080 resolution will be great :)

FWIW I'm a plasma fanboi. Mine has given such excellent service and picture quality (alibeit from purely SD sources) that I wouldn't hesitate in getting another. I like the idea that LCDs run cooler and quieter (my plasma has a mah-oosive cooling fan in it), but I don't like the image streaking that you get from LCD. I also can't justify the extra cost over an equivalent plasma. LED TVs look great in the shops when you see them from the side, but I tend to look at my screen from the front :)

I have a 50" screen on reserve at John Lewis but I havn't decided whether or not to actually buy it yet...
