Squeezing more power from BPU ....?

Hi guys

 

Just wanted some advice and pointers please.

 

I am toying with the idea of a few extra mods to increase the power of a bpu TT, but not sure if its worthwhile etc.

 

From what i have learnt so far getting HKS cams like 256/264 etc arent too good unless you have steel turbos.

 

So i am wondering if the UK cams are a better option?

Also along the lines of injectors wondering if UK 550's will do (i think they need a resistor pack) or would 650's be better?

 

What i think i need is written below - would love to hear what people think about it - what kinda power increases i could expect from it, and maybe an idea of cost??

 

 

* Map2 ECU or Greddy EMB / EMU (might have to be EMB for current budget!!)

* 550 injectors plus resistor pack

* UK Cams

* RyanG remap

Chasing number eh Jamesy? Don't blame you, since SRR I am wanting to do the same, though after speaking to Homer I believe things like CAMS make very little difference to power (on this level) and not worth the money to spend on BPU. Like Andrew says above it might be better spent on keeping the car sticking better to the ground!

 

I think the main question is, what do you favor more at this point, power or reliability? You could get a remap done & up your boost but I guess this would be at the risk of blowing the turbo's. Do you have enough budget & supporting mods to go for a bigger set of twin's? Remember LeeP did manage 824 bhp with his :eyebrows:

Hi guys thanx for the initial replies.

 

I have done some of the minor weight reduction stuff, but nothing like seats out, dash out etc as this is my daily driver and i take the kids out in it!! :D

 

I was hoping to get some more BHP out of the above but wasn't sure which injectors to go for and if to even bother with cams?

 

Price wise i am guessing at:

 

EMB - £180

550 injectors and r/pack - £80 ???

UK cams - £80???

RyanG road map - £250ish?

 

so maybe around £590 before fitting.

Piggy Back ECU

256/256 Cams

650cc Injectors (I can see you going single at some point, you would be paying labour anyway... pay it once)

Remap

 

Your prices are a little low on the injectors and resistor pack iirc. UK cams would normally go for a bit more too.

 

Costly for very little gain on the figure you have just now. Might lose a little torque too with the cams. You would probably be able to make up for it with the remap though.

IMO you would be far better off with an EMU, as it gives far more scope for tuning, EMB cannot retard timing if necessary, also fitting slightly more lumpy cams will only shove your power band further up the RPM range, the injectors are also pointless unless you are going to fit hybrid turbos.

 

save your pennies jamesy and go single next year you wont regret it mate.

i was only thinking that for maybe around £5-600 i could maybe get the car up to 440-450hp onced upped to 1.2 bar with just different ecu, injectors and cams (plus a map)

 

however i would MUCH rather go single/big twins, its just i cant save money - its not possible!!

 

hmm, i will have a think on it.

For 450bhp I think you'll be looking for a small single.

Personally I'd up your boost to 1.2 bar and see what you think. You will find a difference even with .2 bar.

 

Cams on bpu are a waste of money as you won't see much difference maybe not even notice any really.

personally i would sort out better stopping power 1st.

 

no point having all go and no way of stopping.

 

after one or two heavy stops your j specs wont wana play anymore

when it ran on srr Sunday Ryan put it to 1.2 bar but said it ran a bit lean so adjusted it down to 1.05bar for the proper run.

 

Think i may need to replace my fuel pump...

I would not bother spending the money unless you are thinking of going single at a later stage and you pick these parts as a steping stone twards that.

 

If you fit cams i think you will make to much power for the ceramic turbos to handle.

 

You are at 410bhp now, i would be very supprised if you even noticed the difference in power between 410 and 440bhp.

I'm not sure if you've already considered it (or done it), but maybe a bit of judicious weight loss could help - like rear seats, stock amp, unnecessary plastics?

If you want the car to feel faster and run better say over the 1/4 or off the lights go for a BL box and a 3200 rpm converter, you wioll think you found another 100 hp............... trust me;)

Oh and unless you are talking E. Manage ultimate then forget it.

Only the intake cam is different on the UK spec, the J-spec and Uk spec exhaust cams are identical.

 

J-spec

Intake Duration - 224°

Intake Camshaft lift - 7.88mm

 

Exhaust Duration - 233°

Exhaust Camshaft lift - 8.4mm

 

UK Spec

Intake Duration - 233°

Intake Camshaft lift - 8.25mm

 

Exhaust Duration 233°

Exhaust Camshaft lift - 8.4mm

Cheers J - thats why its annoying not knowing for sure if mine are hybrids as i could get away with maybe 1.3 - 1.4 bar and cams!!

 

So you cant really tell much difference in the 20-30bhp against an original starting point of 410ish? i guess its not even 10% increase - maybe it would be best to wait and see what keenly priced single kits come about next year :eyebrows:

 

but even with a single turbo kit (turbo, manifold, wastgate etc), i'd still need:

 

injectors

ecu

cams?

remap

 

is that about right?!! :)

You really are on the laws of diminishing returns. If you plan to go single at some point, then fair enough - but if not, you're going to spend a fair few quid for something that might gain you a tenth on a drag strip.

Ah now i remember our conversation about the BL box ... :D .... i went out in SupraMatt's single Auto with the Michel Lane BL box and then gear changes and feel of it were awesome! Would love one on mine!!

 

....However for the price of one (fitted) i could prob get most single parts ready to install lol !!!

James what's the current spec of your car?

 

As a guide My Garage lists all the mods I was running to support the GT35R (which would be a good size turbo if running with the stock autobox).

Nice spec on yours, quite a bit of a shopping list from what i currently have though .... I like the idea of the GT35R - from what ive read, not much lag and decent bhp figures .... talk to me!! :D
