Help with different file formats and connections

I have just bought one of these off Ebay. As you can see, it is an external HD / media player than can connect direct to either a PC (as a storage device) or to a TV as a playback HD.

The unit comes with 2 sets of cables to attach to the TV. They both have a small 3.5 jack plug at one end and then either 3 x phono plugs (AV connection of white, red and yellow) and the other has 2 x phono plugs with blue, red and green. The TV has input for scart x 2, HDMI x 2, Y-Pb-Pr, and audio LR and vid in.

I have managed to get the thing playing properly but was hoping to play HD downloads (BRRIP) films but it doesn't seem to work. Is this because the unit doesn't support MPeg4 (or whatever it's called)?

Or is it because the cables supplied are not attaching to the HDMI inputs on my TV? If that's the case, could I get a cable that goes from 3.5 jack to HDMI?

Finally (sorry for the long thread) if all else fails, could I convert the downloaded films (BRRIP) to normal AVI format and play then that way?

I have just burned 2 of the films to a DVD and neither of them will play on my DVD player as the file type is not supported. i assume this is because it doesn't play HD films and hasn't the capacity to upscale either.

Methinks I need to look to convert the Mpeg4 files to AVI or get a much better dvd player. What do you fellas think?

If you have burnt films as HD and as you said your DVD player does not support them or have upscaling then they will never play. I take it you are using HD/bluray discs when burning?

What is the file type before you start to burn? I made the mistake of getting an HD film to burn to disc and file never played. I just stick to regular quality and let my DVD player upscale as best as possible.

The file is an MPEG-4 File Format. I burned it to a normal DVD+R disk but that obviously doesnt work. I think i need to either convert the files to standard AVI or alternatively, buy a new HD DVD player.
