Guest nin73
Hi Guys, Had been noticing a small amount of white smoke on start up recently. Left the car for 6 weeks, immobiliser killed the battery dead, thats another issue. When i got it charged up and fired her up it smoked so badly i could hardly see the car or my driveway! The smoke was thick and white. The smoke cleared after say 30 seconds and once warm it doesnt seem to smoke at all. Fired her up this morning, minimal smoke. Nic
Probably just water in the exhaust burning off if it's been stood for a while. You'll usually get build up of condensation in exhaust this time of year, just keep an eye on it when starting and whilst driving over the coming days. jevansio
If you mean "HUGE" amounts of white smoke then it could possibly be a HG, coolant will seep into the cylinder when the car is cooling as the coolant is under pressure, then next time you start you get a load of white smoke. Condensation at startup hardly makes the amount of smoke to make your car & driveway disappear
Guest nin73
When i mean, Huge i am not undestating the amount of smoke! Never seen anything like it, like a fire had been set in the exhaust! How do i check if the HG has gone? Milky dipstick isnt it?
Abz
I also get a huge amount of smoke on start as well, it is a white smoke & if drive for 24 hours its not to bad, if its 3\4 days then you get loads of white smoke! From what I read & gathered it is Stem Values which need to be replaced?

Milky residue on oil cap may also be another indication, but at this time of year and using the car infrequently a milky residue may be normal (also if the failure is only between the cylinder & waterways there could be no sign of the failure in the oil) Also does it appear to be "using" coolant? (rather than white)
Dnk
Worn stem seals shows with a bluey grey colour smoke not white. Ive just changed mine and they were totally scrap and the car only smoked for around 5 seconds before clearing. As jay says get a sniff test done and it'll soon tell you if the head gaskets on its way out.
dude
Is it smoke or steam???? water will cause steam which will hardly smell and dissapate quickly, smoke will smell a lot more and hang around longer;)
Alex
Big fat exhausts hold plenty of water in them...which quickly gets vapourised...you say it was sat for 6 weeks...it's rained a lot in 6 weeks. I can't see it being an issue as it cleared after 30seconds and hasn't reoccured.
Chris Wilson
If it's truly smoke (takes ages to disperse unlike steam) and truly white, not blue, then it's either burning brake fluid (check the brake fluid level) or burning anti freeze (check the radiator and over flow bottle levels). B/fluid will be a knackered master cylinder. A/freeze is possible head gasket issues.
