Plasma screen purging question...

I've got what googling has come up with as a 'dirty' screen....one forum search has suggested that blasting the screen with a white image for an hour or two can help in some case, I'm keen to try...but

How ? I can display pics from a memory card, but any other way ?

Have you tried running an action film of some description full screen for 24 hours, and enabled pixel shifting? Alternatively you could leave the screensaver running for many hours?

 Methinks I should read the manual before asking questions...Its around five years old, but maybe it has these features you guys speak of.

You got me looking in my options now, every now and again the wife has the sky plus on live pause for hours, why I do not know, probably when the phone rings she pauses it for the two or three hours she's on the phone for is my best guess.

Anyhoo this has burned a pause symbol in the bottom left corner, it goes away after a day or so anyway but I'm searching for a screen burn function as mentioned earlier, or similar.

Is the image lighter or darker than the rest of the screen?

If it is lighter, then it is what is called "image retention". The gas in the pixels becomes over-excited and carries on glowing brightly after the signal; is removed. This effect is temporary and will go after a few hours of normal use.

The thing about plasma screens is that the pixels gradually wear out and reduce in brightness over time. This usually happens evenly all over the screen so its not noticable, but if a specific area gets used more than the rest of the screen then the temporary image retention effect becomes permenant and shows up as a darker area where the pixels have become prematurely worn out.

Most screens have an opton to white out the whole screen to reduce the noticability of screen burn. What this actualy does is wear out the rest of the pixels to the same extent as the burnt area, making it less noticable.

If you do have to have static images on your screen, turn on the screen orbiter function if your screen has one. This will move the image by a few pixels every few minutes.

Pioneer PDP 435XDE. I've realised its the same problem I had with it a few years ago. Bummer. Back then it started with the ghost images in the background and after a while developed into solid blocks of colour appearing all over the screen. Its been fine since fixed, but looks like its back again.

Its not screen burn, as Ive found I can get rid of it by disconnecting the cable between screen and receiver and reconnecting. Its intermittant, and will sometimes go away on its own.
