HD TV's. What to get?

Hey all,

I'm thinking of changing my HD TV.

I currently have a 32" Sony Bravia (720p)

You always don't mind afew extra inches ;) So im possibly looking for a 37/40" and would like 1080p, 2 or more HDMI ports, 100Hz+

It'll mainly be used for gaming and watching Sky+ (SD).

Is there any out on the market for around the £500 mark or under?

Also, what are the benefits of the LED TV's over normal plasma/lcd?

Brand wise I dont mind, always had Sony's but from other peoples I've seen I guess you still pay for the name.

I've seen acouple of deals on HotUKdeals at a decent price/spec I want but they've expired now so wondered if anyone had any recommendations they could suggest.

Cheers

Gaz

Pioneer, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, LG

In that order for me when it comes to TV's. I went for the Panasonic as I didn't fancy forking out double the money for the Pioneer.

You are in the market at the right time, the prices have came down LOADS over the last month or 2.

I have been doing a bit of research as were changing our TV soon too

LCD and PLASMA tvs are really dropping in price due to the new LED'S tvs

LEDS IS THE WAY TO GO MATE!

I know technology is changing all the time but if you by a lcd or plasma, its like buying a laptop with Vista lol old stuff now,

I went to currys and they had 3 Samsung tvs lcd, plamsa and led playing at the same film so you can see the difference and the LED tv has a much much better picture.

LCD and plasma are a pain in the ass in IMO as you have to figure out how light or dark your room is to make the right choice

Leds tv also about 2 cm think and use 30% less elec too

Most Tvs now are HD as well as 1080p which you want for but you want the highest contrast ratio you can get.

Check out the difference in cantrast ratio between the lcd or plasma to the leds....LED are so much higher

this is a great deal

Cheers for the pointers guys.

I dont need one urgently so may wait to see if any deals happen in the new year.

The mrs also has 20% voucher for co-op electrical with 5yr warranty as she works for the travel company so that should knock a fair bit off :)

May try and put afew extra pennies to the side for an LED TV. Will take a trip to currys and have a gander.

Cheers for the pointers.

(1 last thing, Toshiba Regza's any good?)

Thanks

As stated already, the LED's are amazing picture wise compared to the others. Samsungs are the only ones I'm aware of at the moment that are doing them.

I'm thinking about selling mine in the near future to get their 55" jobby. I've found it on the web for just over 2K. I bought my current 55" Hitachi for 3.5K a few years ago.

LED's Really?

Firstly, just to clear this up, an LED tv is still an LCD panel, it's only LED backlit. Therefore it still has the same traits as any other LCD tv.

For example the motion handling of the LED tv can be poor in some instances; watching planet earth on blu-ray, very visible deterioration in the picture quality when the action on screen is fast moving. A visible halo effect around the fast moving objects on the screen can be seen as the LCD panel cannot react fast enough, very disappointing for what is usually a £700+ tv. Also, when it comes to light foreground images with a dark background(end credits for example), instead of the writing being white, it is distinctly grey. This is the same for all colours, not just black on white. Also SD viewing via freeview can be poor. The LED tv's are a clever marketing campaign, focusing on the darkest blacks with detriment to other attributes of the tv.

Looks good though.

IMHO, Samsung: jack of all trades, master of none!

Your decision should be based on what you actually use your tv for: be it high definition gaming and sport or just freeview (SD). If you use it for HD tv, action movies, football, xbox, ps3, then plasma is the way to go. There are several misconceptions about plasma tv's, almost all of which have no relevance to current plasma tv's. For example screen burn isn't an issue on a good quality plasma tv.

If your just looking for something for the bedroom that'll only be used for SD viewing then a LCD will suffice.

IMO something like a Panasonic G10 plasma will give you excellent motion handling, stunning HD picture aswell as having a much better SD picture quality, I would choose this over any LED(LCD) tv.

Whatever you choose, go and actually see it working. And I don't mean watching a store demo, get a blu-ray or HD tv working on it. Just ask the assistant they should be able to do this for you.

I know the LED is a LCD with different backlight method. However, I sat watching the 55" Samsung LED on display 2 days ago running next to other screens, Panasonics new Viera being one of them. They were all running from the same source, a HD Blu-ray demo disc with clips from films of all types....including the blue planet.

Proof is in the pudding mate, the Samsung made the others look lackluster and vague. It didn't blur, there were no artifacts, colours were virbrant and sharp with no bleed. All this, and it's about 1cm thick.

The Panasonic Plasma is still using 2 year old technology.

The best plasma on the market is the Pioneer, but, they only come in 50" or 60" and as they have now stopped making them they are becoming rare. If you do still find one at a shop, Pioneer do still offer a 5 year warranty as standard!

Samsung only has a 1 year.

You can't go with the in-store demo's unfortunately. When I got my Panny screen I had to set up all the colour etc to get the picture optimum. Samsung must have taken heed of this as they were one of the worst visual performers out of the box, pioneer have always been pretty much spot on.

The guys in store actually know very little about setting up the TV's (I did ask) so the side by side comparisons in the likes of Comet can't really be considered as an open and shut case.

Having re-read my comments, it could be contrued that I'm coming across as a bit of a fanboy for the LED's. I'd like to stress this is not the case. I've never ever been a fan of Samsung, or LCD's for that matter. My last screen was a plasma, my current screen is a plasma. At the time I was in the market for a new TV, the plasmas wiped the floor with LCD's. But I think things have moved on, hence why big players like Sony only sell LCD's now. LCD's issues (artifacts, blurring, the inability to do black), much like plasmas issues, (screen burn, light degredation over time) are a thing of the past. Things are a lot closer now between the two.

I've read reviews on amps, TV's, moniters, disc players, speakers etc, and found myself disagreeing hugely with reviews, especially from what hifi. I'd take what's written in magazines with a pinch of salt.

I guess what I'm saying is, go have a look at what's been suggested here, and make a decision based on what you see, not what you read. Find a specialist with a decent demo room and have a play. For example, Sevenoaks hifi in Bromley have 2 demo rooms, you ask them for specific gear to be setup and they'll put it all in for you. You can then sit there and check it out for yourself.

Regardless of the LED comments, we have a £500 budget here which isn't going to get LED technology.

Whatever you get, I'd stick with 1080P or another upgrade is likely to be on the cards fairly soon.

There are some good deals around. Here are a few LCD / Plasmas choices:

What's the Mhz on that and do you know if its true Mhz, The reason i say true is not all are. (EDIT just reread the details lol)

if you have a TV which is a true 120Mhz and over you will also be forward compatible to one type of 3D TV. (in fact you could have 3D TV now with it if you wanted ;) and watch all movies in 3D if you have a PC with certain graphics cards.

I don't expect this to be the type of 3D that takes off, but it is one type that works.
