E60 rear lights

Right helping a mate upgrade his rear lights to LED unit but I can't seem to find a way to completely remove the whole unit. It's a pretty high spec E60 550i so I don't want to risk fubaring it.

 

Did some googling but can't seem to find any useful information. I wonder if any member here can offer some help? Would prefer a link to some sort of website or guide with some pictures :p
