banni_supra
Hi people. I have recently expressed interest in joining the Royal Marines as a Commando, i have been for my initial prep course and have been training hard. The marines is something ive always fancied however put it off for a while. While im young (22) this is a perfect time i've always loved fitness anyway so this is a big test for me. However i know its such a big commitment and my life would change dramatically just wanted your guys 2pence on the matter. seen as i spend half my days on here lol! Not saying im going to pass the process as its pretty intense but if im going for something ill do everything in my power to pass! I'm currently on approx 25k a year and this would drop massively down to 13k for 8 months then upto 16k and keep increasing upto 27k so i would have to sell my house etc.... Anyway thanks for reading [GRIN][/GRIN]

Gerry
A mate of mine recently got in, said it was hard but not silly. Thought he would be shipped off to somewhere warm to play with guns, but he's just started a two year stint guarding submarines in Scotland ! On the upside, he says the accomodation is great and nobody is shooting at him :-) G Good Luck.

SupraAyf
A mate of mine recently got in, said it was hard but not silly. It's manageable to any guy who has a good fitness level but the new playstation generation these days are starting to find it more difficult. banni_supra
Yeah, its not all firing on the front line in afgan, the marines undertake so many different duties, most which require long term away from home. I just want to do something good with my life!

Tourniquet
Go for it matey, If I could go back to just leaving school kind of age I'd join the Parachute Regiment regulars. I wasn't interested back then but since then joined 4 Para T.A for a bit and loved it. Again, I wasn't as into it even then as I am now and didn't realise what an elite unit the Marines and Paras were so hats off to you for making the grade or even having a go. I have great respect for our boys and girls and anyone that does anything for them in any way. Good luck with the training, I've seen what you will have to go through and I would say it isn't any easier than P Company lmao, but then it is a state of mind after all

Tourniquet
You'll be fine if you're fit mate, that was my problem tbh. The training and weapons and field craft all come but the fitness is what caused me problems. Im not unfit as such, Im bout 5' 9" and 10 stone but went from being a gamer/pub dude to running 8 miles through forests with a weapon and 35lbs on my back and it was a shock to the system to say the least lol. As I said, all the best and keep us posted but even if u make it......always remember ur still beneath the marron machine lol j.k

Rob
It all sounds very dangerous to me. You don't think it might be better if you worked your way towards the Marines, say, via banking? http://www.peakoil.org.au/dave.kimble/liontamer/cap005.jpg

j80leo
Have you passed you PRMC then? and just waiting for your 36weeks training. I did this myself and did not follow it through and the PRMC was really hard work but managed it ok, you have got to have a really strong mind set for this as the training is intense but well worth it fella so do it!!. colsoop
When you join the the RM or Para Regt then you will realise why the above comment is so funny. Good luck and well done on making such a great choice of cap badge:Pling: If its what you want to do then get cracking. If it was me starting again i would invest in a pair of issue boots and get them well broken in. I would also build up my leg and back strength and get used to doing long distances with a heavy pack. When i was training for the Army i started off by running in trainers then when i could achieve reasonable speed and distance i switched to boots, to begin with i ran more off road around parks to get my ankles and other muscles used to the extyra weigh of the boots. When i was comfortable with the boot running i went on to running with a bergen. You don't need to do any of this really but i found that the fitter you are before you start training the more info you can take in and learn and the easier you will find the whole build up and testing. Don't forget to find some good hills to run up and down. Good luck to you.
