Wez
Hey All, What encryption software do people use if any? Until recently I always used Cryptext 3.4 which enabled you to encrypt using the right click context menu, you could highlight folders or files. This worked great but sadly does not work on Windows 7 x64 For alternatives I have been looking at :- http://www.truecrypt.org/ and http://www.safehousesoftware.com/SafeHouseExplorer.aspx With both of these you create an encrypted volume and then mount as a drive to copy to and from, SafeHouse explorer can run as a single executable so can be moved around on USB keys etc. The only issue with these two is that the volumes are created at a set size which you decide when creating them, to me this is not as flexible as encrypting seperate files and folders. Thorin
Truecrypt can be run from a USB key too, there's a "traveller disk setup" option in the main app which just copies the files needed to a USB stick. I've used it, it works, and I've never heard of safehouse so can't comment on that. Truecrypt seems popular.
stevie_b
I use Axcrypt: this encrypts individual files. I'm not sure if it can do folders en-masse.
Thorin
Oh also, truecrypt allows you to specify a dynamic encrypted file container. You specify a maximum size it's allowed to grow to but your encrypted file's size will only be as big as whatever you have stored in there. Smallshinyant
Truecrypt here, for both drives and memory sticks.
Wez
It seems truecrypt is the most popular, I will give it a go later. The dynamic volumes sound like a good idea, so I could create a 100GB volume and just dump files into it and it would grow upto a max of 100GB. AndyT
Cryptainer Le. Is nice. Free Edit: One to avoid is Lockbox. It encrypts and is free, but if someone has Ubuntu all contents of encrypted files are open to read.
Wez
Whatever happened to just using PGP? It ain't free. Shame as they have some nice apps
MrRalphMan
I use TrueCrypt as you don't need to install it, you can have the EXE files and run them from anywhere. It also has a quite useful feature, which I don't actually use, where it can Encrypt your windows disk and you need to enter a password before you can log into windows. If someone 'borrows' your disk then they can't just drop it into their machine and read any of your files.
Wez
I use TrueCrypt as you don't need to install it, you can have the EXE files and run them from anywhere. Do you mean that once you have installed it you can create an exe that prompts for a password to unlock the volume on any machine, you still have to install on your main machine to create the exe dont you? Keith C
What about bitlocker? And/or encrypted hard disks - Seagate FDE's are nice and painless to use.
Wez
Went with TrueCrypt, very good indeed
MrRalphMan
Sorry missed your last question, did you have to install it or did it provide a standalone solution without install.
Wez
Sorry missed your last question, did you have to install it or did it provide a standalone solution without install. You download the exe and when you run it you have the option to install or extract, I just extracted to a directory and ran the app from there. Have to say its very very fast, the on-the-fly encryption speeds are much quicker than the older cryptext, so quick you wouldnt know you was copying to an encrypted volume. Five stars from me
