Tricky-Ricky
Can anyone suggest a free line in sound recorder? i want to record some of my old vinyl and minidiscs onto my PC, so i want something that lets me import and adjust input levels, to avoid distortion, and recored in MP3 format. I know i can record via windows, but this is very limited, no adjustments so i get distortion, and its saved as WMA.
stuohy
Audacity; it's free... http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ The only thing you have to do to save in mp3 is download a certain dll (lameenc.dll if memory serves correctly) and tell the program where it is... very easy
The-Plethora
Another vote for Audacity, very cool (and free) bit of software
AlexJames
failing that, I use protools, but it did cost me a few hundred :s
Tricky-Ricky
OK what am i doing wrong? downloaded Audacity with the lame MP3 plug in, and every time i record something and save it as MP3 it plays back too fast, obviously some settings are wrong but i'm dammed if i can find anything that has an influence or changes anything? Also it still seems to distort, despite turning down the input volume:(

The-Plethora
Are you using the line in or mic socket on your sound card? Make sure you use line in. If you are using windows XP go into conrtrol panel and choose sound (I think thats what its called) then look on the recording tab and check your line in is at a reasonable volume there also. Yes line in and, I'm using Vista, and it doesn't even have a proper mixer, just output volume.
