Kitty's not well - Any Advice?

Well it's not good.

She's at the vets on a drip and her kidneys aren't good. The Vet says the only thing in her favour is that her white blood cell count is very high which could mean she's fighting an infection. The other side is it's kidney failure of some sort.

Can't desribe how lost I feel right now. I wouldn't have ever thought I'd get so attached to an animal like this, but our little bear has found a place in my heart I didn't know existed.

Right now I'd give anything for her to be home and well, stinking the place out waking me up at 5.00 in the morning :(

I feel so helpless too, knowing I can't do anything do help; just have to sit tight and hope :(

:( Gutted. I hope kitty's age and the vet turn things around Matt.

Thanks guys,

The vet called this morning and it seems that there is an improvement this morning. She's very alert and she's seeking some attention for a fuss etc. Not out of the woods, but knowing that there is a marked improvement this morning is such a relief.

She's also used her tray for a wee, which means not only has she found the strength to get up and go, things are getting flushed through.

Thanks again for the messages of support, means a lot :)

A kidney infection could cause all the clinical signs you've described. The toxins they should be getting rid of can cause vomiting and the staggering if concentrations are enough. It would also push the white count up. If so, most cases (especially in younger animals) respond fairly well to treatment unlike chronic kidney failure in old cats, and there may well be no permanent damage.

Having said that, depending on how high the bloods results were, minor damage can be caused to the kidneys by various other things such as increased blood pressure or infections elsewhere in the body. Once these are cleared up the results come back down to normal.

The worms are probably completely irrelevant. Glad to here she's doing better. :)

Thanks Stevie, that's made me feel better :) She's really young and strong, which is good.

The count they were concerned about, which was the creatinine levels, were really high....

I think they were a sort of Redherring for us, as that was the first thing we noticed.

Know exactly how you feel, I am still feeling a little lost and helpless too at mo after my Cat was hit by a car about 2 weeks ago. He is still back and forth to Vet and on Thursday he has to have another Op to have his Tail removed :(

Bad times. Hope your Cat is better soon mate x

Glad to here it seems she is on the mend Matt, hope she makes a full recovery:)

Thanks Ricky, I'm hoping she will make a full recovery. I don't mind if we have to feed her tablets though for the rest of the her life as long as she pulls though.

Thank God for pet insurance too! phew.

  • 10 months later...

Yeah she did Jackso, thanks for the thought :)

It was very touch and go but she's been fine ever since. It took ages for her fur to grow back from having it shaven around her tummy though! She jumped up on the bed about 5.00 this morning and got under the covers with us. Higly annoying so early in the morning, but better than not having her around at all!

Cheers mate.

Are they harnessed together there? Do you have them pulling a miniature sled or something?

No, it's a full size sled. Off shot there's another 40-50 cats all strapped in. I turn the hoover on that is attached to it and they all shoot off pulling me around :)
