Coolant question

In the summer months I very much like to run 80/20

(as in 80% de-ionised water and 20% pure compatible antifreeze for aluminum heads)

I've found that it makes a big difference in cooling efficiency, and the partial draining in October to top up the antifreeze is always beneficial.

Anyone know why you should use Forlife stuff instead of normal ethylene glycol based antifreeze?

Why Red for J Spec and Green for UK Spec?

Also, anyone drained the coolant. How easy is the access to the drain plug on the block?

According to the manual, ethylene glycol is fine mate.

Forlife is mixed with deionised water, which is important to slow down the buildup of scum inside the water jackets. The majority of garages use tap water, don't forget.

I don't think it's easy even to see that plug, let alone undo it

But that's no problem, just undo the rad one, drain what you can, fill with deionised water, run it for a few minutes, then drain again. After a couple of times it will all be pure water.

That's pretty typical then!

Cheers, that's what I normally do.

I've already got some ethylene glycol based antifreeze, no way I'm spending three times as much for the Forlife stuff - waste of money! :sly:

the block drain plug is an absolute b*****d to get to, if you are determined to drain the block use the search button and make sure you know exactly where it is, some plasters and bandages might also be usefull, like johnA sez just flush it a couple of times

I could be speaking out of turn but I was informed a while back...

That the difference between red and green was there because of the manufacturing differences in the heads now... and that the green can possible corrode it...

Dunno... I've always stuck with the red stuff...

I use Toyota Red coolant (not Forlife) also used to use the same in my Celica GT4, no problems whatsoever.

I'm sure you should only use red as green is not suitable for higher performance cars. :)

What are you all moaning about, it is not difficult, you just need a reasonable length extension bar and about 30 seconds of your time. IMHO it should come out as there is a lot of coolant in there.
