Dragonball
What do you good people recommend? I think she wants to spend about £2.5K She is looking for something with four doors preferably - as she is usually the 'designated driver' (however I suspect she will take the right car with 2!) Over a 1.2 engine if pos - but not too much due to insurance etc. Suggestions and anyone selling something suitable welcome based nr twickenham Cheers

Guigsy
i had a 1.2 clio as a first car and it was great. I got it from new so had 1 years free insurance. It was expensive but not killer. I imagine as a first car anything over a 1.2 will be silly money to insure. Especialy now
Supra786
Astra? Really nice shape on the more recent ones.
The Restorer
We had a 96 Fiesta for a year a while back. Sold it to my auntie and she's had it for 3 years now too. After having a 306 once I swore never to go back to French cars. At a budget of £2.5k though I think Golfs look new, safe and reliable too. Guest suprastar380bhp
3 series bmw e36 compact 1.6 ? (a good one) something that will protect her? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1299092.htm
Porky1978
Yaris 1.3?? Might struggle with 2.5k but she may get lucky with an older one.
Scott
Definitely something Japanese. £2.5k isn't going to get her a particularly new car so you would want something with known reliability. The Yaris is a very good shout. Not the prettiest of cars IMO but without doubt one of the best in it's class.
Porky1978
Last one i had (yaris that is) i got 117 mph out of!!! Not bad for a 1.0l engine and reliability-wise i never had an ounce of bother with it. Agreed about the looks but the car always appealed more to women anyway so can't see it being an obstacle in this case.

Top speed in a 1.0l Yaris is 96mph so thats one hell of an over-read on your speedo

b_have
Anyone have or driven the Yaris D4D (VNT diesel turbo) ? My Mrs is looking for one and will be selling her '99 Corsa (1.2 five door).
Porky1978
either that or he was going down hill with wind assist I actually was going downhill, on the A50 between Stoke and Uttoxeter. Dont know about the wind but was VERY close to the limiter!! Incidentally 5th gear was the only gear i never topped out in.
Scott
We hit a 105 (indicated) in a 16v 1.0l corsa. We were impressed with that, take into account the over read and its not so good though.
Westcoaster
Anyone have or driven the Yaris D4D (VNT diesel turbo) ? My Mrs is looking for one and will be selling her '99 Corsa (1.2 five door). Yes, my wife has one as a lease car with the semi auto box and I've driven it a lot. It's a good sized small car with a decent boot, reasonable handling and averages 62mpg (in the wife's hands and 57 mpg when I drive it!) Reasonable turn of speed too. I'm still not a fan of oil burners though! For the £2.5k daughters car, can I throw the Daihatsu Sirion and Daihatsu YRV into the pot. They are relatively rare, use the same engines as the Yaris (in fact the Yaris uses Daihatsu designed petrol engines) and are very reliable. Daihatsus are built in Japan, Yaris' are built in France. Guest SupraGTE
I have the yaris D4D 1.4 i haft to say it have not let me down and the 1.4 d4d is one of most problem free engines in a yaris, yaris is bulit i n Japan and in France the ones made in France has Vin starting on VN and the ones from Japan starts With a J. had 2 daihatsu Charades in my life newer and old one and i was very happy with them and as the older charade use "mini idea" with wheel really out in the corners it handles well, if a Toyota , then stay away from The MMT gearbox!!
