Releasing Games before the Movie

Does this annoy anyone else? I can't follow the logic with regards to this. Why on earth would you release a computer game that follows the same storyline as a movie before the movie has been released? I just noticed that game Avatar is being released on the 4th of December while the movie isn't being released until the 18th. I laughed when someone moaned about spoilers of MW2 but this is a little different to me. It isn't just a game, it's the plot of a movie that you aren't a part of. The entertainment is in playing the game, the plot is just a little extra. The whole point of an enjoyable movie is the plot, it almost makes seeing the film pointless.

Of course it isn't that much of an issue as you can just not play the game until you have seen the movie (if that bothers you), it just seems very weird to me. I have noticed this with a lot of movies over the years.

You suffering from roid rage by any chance today Scott?

I generally hate the pointless cash-ins of games based on movies or books. I don't think I could even list 5 games that are good based on them. Can you?

I can even only think of a few good games that spawned good movies

Resident Evil

Final Fantasy (albeit not for the plot)

Doom was crap in film format. Wolfenstein I think is getting a film? Isn't Halo getting one sometime?

Games made into decent films....

Mortal Kombat - Ok you will probably laugh but I thought the original movie was decent.

Resident Evil - I still enjoy watching it now. The 2nd wasn't bad but the 3rd was a bit iffy.

Bloodrayne - Pretty hot, not a great plot but I liked the action. Can't beat an angry chick.

Hitman - Again, no Oscar winner but I did enjoy it.

Thats all I have really and to be honest they aren't particularly good. Just good enough for a mention.

The plot is already given away in the trailers. If the film had some serious plot twist that made it memoriable, a la Sixth Sense, then I'd agree. however, Avatar, is just pochahontas (sp) with a much bigger budget and special effects :D

That doesn't mean to say I'm not looking forward to it. I'm massively hyped to see it after watching the latest trailer.
