Blu-Ray player advice required

I'm looking to change the DVD player in the house and was considering a Blu-Ray player that can play standard DVDs. Anybody got any advice in terms of quality of image etc? I know there's upconverting involved when watching a normal DVD on a Blu-Ray player but that's about it. My DVD collection is all standard DVDs but am looking to buy into the future!

Telly is a 46" Sony HD TV so would benefit from Blu-Ray films etc.

Advice hugely appreciated. Budget-wise? £150-£200 at a push!

The best Blu-Ray players are still Sony AFIK. Basically any of the sony ones should be good. 1080p upscaling is pretty much guaranteed with most of them.

To be honest I would recommend a PS3, it's still one of the fastest for loading, 1080p upscaling and image quality. You get the added advantage of it being a fully fledged mediacenter and games machine.

yep id go for a ps3 too, less clutter. although ive got both, but i got the samsung one really cheap (£40!!!) as an ex display. ive never connected it, bought it to fill the gap in my tv stand lol. the ps3 ones adequate enough for me so kept that connected :)

although, the ps3 can get quite hot, so i might get one of these to help cool it...

Yeah right. Mine has never been upright and has never overheat. I'm guessing you are refering to the 1% of ps3 failures.

nope, im referring to the load we had come back when they first launched. I used to work in pcw (i know :() and at one point we gave up testing them and just swapped em out. That and i know 2 people whose died on them, both were laying flat. but that was the first lot on the market.

if yours is working ok flat then maybe the issues been fixed :search:

cant see sony not addressing it to be honest. Also, the coolers that you can get for them actually make the problem worse....

I've got a LG blu-ray player, and its well worth having, its got a USB connection on it and you can look at movies you down loaded from an external hard drive, ive also got a PS3, the blu-ray player is much better to use for watching movies and your pick a good one up for half the price of a PS3!!

Gadget show did a comparison test and the PS3 came out on top with every test (even against other sony players). It has to be said that the remote control is a must have if that is its primary use though.

Maybe so, but the fact you can watch downloaded movies from a USB stick or an external hard drive is a winner for me, sony would not allow that sort of behavior at all!!

He was challenged Gaz. If you check his post history there will be a "what do I win" thread or something along those lines.

Thanks Scott. Although, it appears my threads been deleted without my knowledge :search:

I bought the sony BD 550s (at least I think thats what its called) The ps3 is a bit noisey with the fan constantly running when watching films (but is you have your home cinema loud enough you'll not notice). I have a two year old son so can rarely use my home cinema to its potential. My stand alone player is much quieter, cost £250, though it's probably cheaper now, and is multi region. Get it from Richer sounds and you'll get a multi region one.
