GRIM
Hello guys I have 3 problems with my '97 Supra TT 6sp. 1. on speed over 60 miles/h a steering wheel vibrates a little and with speed it becomes more frequent (wheel alignment is not good cause I changed the ride height + 1" or so and wheels look like \___/ and i think a wheel balance can be kinda wrong ) 2. at idle my car vibrates a little but if i give it a little bit throttle (just couple RPMs) it stops (it started after i removed a throttle body & manifold) 3. and last but worst thing ever which makes me really crazy, even on a little bumpy road I hear knocking sound(it sounds like metal hits metal) from rear & front (it was when I bought my car) it sounds like some bushings are dead but i have checked and they look good I have OHLINS coilovers they don't look like they leak or something please help me guys I think I'm going crazy I really drive my car very rare but when I do it's just terrible
Scooter
I suspect an engine mount(s). If you get under the car and find the engine mounts, grab the lower metal cup and try and rotate it.......if it has any slack its knackered and with mine you could make the knocking noise by hand. I'll try and post a pic or two later if it would help? Well worth torquing up the front subframe bolts too. 17mm (deep) and 19mm sockets needed. 19mm's are a cluster of 3 each side in from the front side jacking points, 17mm's one are further forward and up in the alloy part of the subframe. GRIM
engine mounts look good and the vibration came after I reinstalled a throttle body and manifold but reused the gaskets could it be a problem? maybe it's leaking? can it be a reason of a vibration? It disappears even if I just slightly open the throttle and give a couple rpms not even to 800rpm from underneath of the car I've re-tightened all the bolts I could see can you show me a pic of that subframe bolts? EDIT I forgot to add that at idle RPM fluctuate very little, it's even hardly noticible Edited November 23, 2009 by GRIM (see edit history)
Scooter
here's a picture of the engine mount......i could rotate the metal silver cup by hand - worth checking yours IMO. The bottom left of the photo shows the alloy subframe and recessed here is the bottom of the engine mount. Further forward and I think one either side of the steering rack gaitor (it certainly is almost in the way of getting up to one of the bolts) are the 17mm bolts. You will need a deep 17mm socket and at least a 6" extension before you can then get a ratchet/torque wrench onto it. I'll search for some more pics......... nigelboyne
wheels need balancing. also the knocking noise could be from the shocks.
GRIM
Thanks guys for your replys checked the flywheel bolts an they are ok I'll balance the wheels and try to find a place to correct the alignment (my car is kinda low and it's very difficult to find a place a can drive on) also if I have a shocks out how can I check it? Guest Suprafly
The knocking you're getting from the front and rear...... my money is on the anti roll bar bushes, I've had the same problem and I'm sure you'll be glad to hear you can buy a poly front and rear anti roll bar bushes from whifbitz for under 40 quid. If you jack up your car, remove the undertray and take a firm grip of the anti roll bar, you'll get play on it if the mounting bushes have gone.
