TTRickeh
Hi guys, As some of you may know i've replaced the rear wheel bearings and loads of suspension parts on the back of my Supra. I had the MOT on thursday which it passed (hooray!!) but there was an advisory that both rear wheel bearings had slight play. I was a bit surprised as obviously i've just replaced them with new drive flanges too. I've just jacked the car up and gave it the top to bottom wobble and there is a slight amount of play. I tried tightening the hub bolt but it doesn't seem to make any difference. There is next to no movement when pushing left to right. I don't notice any weird noises when driving it. Is there naturally any play from top to bottom because as far as i've read there should be none at all. Can wheel bearings be installed incorrectly leading to this? Looking forward to hearing your opinions, Cheers.
Chris Wilson
A wheel bearing with excess clearance will have radial play in all directions equally. Unless the pads are stabilising the disc and hub in the horizontal plane and inhibiting movement it'll be wear in something else. the correct check is to do the wheel waggle test whilst someone depresses the foot brake very hard. If the play goes it's the hub bearings, if it remains it's something else.
TTRickeh
Thanks for your input Chris I appreciate it. Could you substitute the foot brake for the hand brake here? I tried it, by accident, with the hand brake on and the movement disappeared. I can't understand how new bearings could have movement in them unless they were damaged during installation. If the handbrake is not an appropriate substitute in this case I will try with the foot brake and see if there is movement. If it is not the wheel bearings it will be a loose nut as there should be no worn bushes or ball joints since, aside from the strut rods, they are all brand new. Chris Wilson
The caliper will clamp the hub much more securely than the hand brake shoes, in a lateral sense, but if the handbrake being on fixes the movement then it's in the hub / hub bearing interface or the hub bearings themselves. nasoup
Hi did you find the problem? I had a rear bearing and hub drive replaced a few weeks ago but I have checked for wheel play today, beacause the car didnt feel right, and there was! How is this with a new bearing and hub drive? I did carryout the repair myself but i'm pretty compitent in my work abilitys (engineer for 7yrs), should i just pay someone to fix it second time around?
