Dnk
Ive sold my Landcruiser and fancy a newer 4 x 4, im looking at the facelift X5 3.0 D sport, has anyone owned one, got one or have any relevant info on them. Supposedly will return 30 mpg on a run ? Ive found one not far from me that looks exactly what i want, 2004 04 3.0 D sport facelift with FBMWSH and 1 owner I did look briefly at the Audi RS6 but i really dont need 2 400 + hp cars on the drive
edge
Nothing wrong worng with 2 x 400 bhp cars on the drive! I have heard they are a nice drive but useless off road.
far
yes nice cars, get a lower mileage one if you can, you will probably want to sort the headlight halos out with brighter ones and also google 'bmw swirl flaps' there is a design fault on the bmw diesel engines which causes the flaps to fail and be fed into the intake manifold - there is a DIY to remove them if you are handy around an engine. Also have a look at the CV boots, tend to fail at around 60k - theres tons of info on BMW land
far
heres more info on swirl flaps
ilicos
The fuel guages sometimes fail and you can get stranded when you think you still have half a tank.
DSK
A nice dynamic drive for a 4x4 and the 3.0d are good when running right but BMWs are not as robust as people like to think. Got 2 in the family, both 4.4 V8 petrol though. Besides the swirl flaps, the 3.0D engines commonly on the 5 series tended to blow the fuel systems (about a £1K-3K repair depending on severity). Cooling systems on BMWs in general are not great so be sure that there are no air locks, correct coolant grade and level etc as the basics are correct. Also, take a look at the interior, I'm a BMW fan, had a few, still got one, but in recent years the interiors have been poor with recycled 2nd rate plastics that you would not expect to find in a Vauxhall Vectra! IMO, a porsche Cayenne is a far superior quality vehicle, range rover Sport TDV6 is decent enough quality wise but very heavy. How about a wild card, Volvo XC90 D5? Dnk
Thanks for all the info guys, i'd heard about the swirl flaps, cv boots and suspension bushes, also on earlier models auto gearbox problems along with recycled trim, i found an X5 with 69k on the clock and the drivers seat was worn through on the bolster. I'd not thought about the Volvo XC90 D5 as i really like the look of the facelift X5.
far
...oh, also listen out for a whistling turbo if you are buying at that sort of milaege, I've had two X5's and the turbo does whistle a tad but if its shrieking and getting louder as you go through the rev range then walk away or negotiate against the price. budget circa 1.5k for replacement AFAIK these cant be reconned on that engine IMO cayenee is too juicy and no diesel version - keep us posted

michael
IMO cayenee is too juicy and no diesel version http://www.porsche.com/uk/models/cayenne/cayenne-diesel/ I'd rather have a Touareg V10 TDI though. http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/31392/volkswagen_touareg.html Even more so if it's tweaked: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/46361/volkswagen_touareg.html

One of the only oil-burners I would consider buying.

bigbloodyturbo
I've been told toureg v10 diesels have big mechanical problems, can't remember whether it was the engine or the gearbox, probably the gearbox with the sort of torque they make. Dnk
I heard the v10 touareg has engine dramas, it also isnt that nice inside, the x5 from what a mate was telling me hence my change of plan are just waiting to break. He funnily enough on the day i popped to see him had one on the ramp with £1000's worth of repairs required and it wasnt that old either. Im happy with my winter rag top but seriously hope we dont get any white stuff or i'll be stopping in a lot
stevie_b
Nice BMW Dnk, it looks like a good example. Be sure to remove the indicator stalk to make it compliant with BMW standards.
