Plexi / Acrylic Glass advice

Does anybody here work extensively with 'plastic' glass such as poly-acrylic or plexi.

 

I'm considering using a fairly large sheet(500mm x 700mm) of 5 to 8mm thick, obviously it is more impact resistant than traditional glass however what happens if a sheet that size gets impacted?

 

Does it shatter, crack?
