supra dan
can i buy the upgrade windows 7 to load on a pc with XP or will i need the full version?
SupraDan24
I think they're one in the same, not sure what you mean by full version?? you can either upgrade your Xp (meaning it'll simply overwrite XP with 7 and you'll keep all your files) depending on whether or not its compatible with the upgrade, XP is 32bit same as windows 7 so i think it is but im not 100% as i've never tried it, or you can do a clean install like i did when i changed from 64bit Vista Premium. Do you own a copy on disc??
Martin J
You can't "upgrade" from XP, only Vista. With XP, 7 basically installs itself over the top but doesn't format your hard drive (if you run the setup from within XP - not sure if you boot from the CD), so if you want files kept you could make a directory on the C drive called say, 'to keep' and they won't be touched. It also keeps the old Windows installation in a 'Windows.old' folder. And also, last time I checked you couldn't get an 'upgrade' version in the EU - as SupraDan24 says, the upgrade/full version are the same thing due to the legal wranglings. SupraDan24
It did this is on mine metal and I booted mine from CD. I was puzzled as to why i kept all my files though, it wouldnt let me chose the upgrade option as i had 64bit Vista, so i chose the clean install and backed up all my files to a portable HDD before hand. Then once it had finished, i still had all my files in my on both my C and E drive. Couldnt get my head round that one lol. Thanks for clearing it up

robin
I bought an upgrade version direct from microsoft, downloaded the iso and installed. Cheaper then a normal version but it wont activate as a clean install.

SupraDan24
thats what i was worried about were you running xp before? I see what you mean now mate, i've had a look and come up with this for you. If you are using Windows XP, then there is no upgrade option to Windows 7. Windows 7 does not provide an direct in-place upgrade for Windows XP that will retain user’s applications, programs, settings, customizations, personalization and data while setup performing installation of Windows. If you try to upgrade to Windows 7 from a system which is using Windows XP, you will be shown this error report which informs you that direct upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 is not available. upgrade error Once you get a Windows 7 DVD, you will need to do a fresh install on your machine if you are using Windows XP (although you can upgrade to Vista and then to Windows 7). Microsoft recommends Windows Easy Transfer which can be used to preserve your files and settings from your XP machine, but please note that it will NOT back up and transfer program files and applications. You will need to reinstall all the applications again.
SupraDan24
Looks like the only choice for you is to Buy it on Disc and do a fresh install. You'll keep all your files but you'll lose any installed programs you have. This is how i did it. It was easy to just re-download the programs again then re-install them.
