Need help concerning stuff in the engine

Hi all,

 

First of all, I apologize for the long post but I'm a noob when it comes to engines and anything to do with them. I hope someone could offer some help and advice.

 

Right, was giving the engine bay a good wipe when I noticed some things which worries me.

 

First of is this :

It's where the brake fluid reservoir is attached too. I noticed something must have leaked since there's an orange stain. I sprayed some of it with Silicone lube and it went away. Not sure if its still leaking though. The brake fluid is right between max and min where it should be. Is there anything wrong with it?

 

Second is this :

 

Probably nothing important but what looks like pipe leading to the exhaust system is really crusty and reddish. I didn't spray any lube on it since I reckon it could get quite hot. Does it look normal?

Finally, this is a biggie. I noticed what appears to be part of the drive shaft assembly. Which is this:

That is what it looked like after a light sprating of Silicone lube, it was REALLY rusted all along before.

 

Now I did noticed that when I turn the steering wheel I would feel a faint jerk or knock as feedback from the steering wheel. I also feel slight vibration at speeds around 70-80mph.

Now I went for a short drive after showering that bit with silicone lube and I didn't seem to notice that jerk/knock anymore. I don't have the chance to test it at 70-80 because it was late and pissing down with rain.

 

I'm pretty worried since the results could be catastrophic if this bit snaps while I'm driving at motorway speeds... I don't have a clue if about the condition its in though, just judging by the looks of things.

Just a quick comment.

 

The stain you referred to on the brake servo, is not visable. You need to use something like brake cleaner to get off the stuff you have sprayed on. Wipe it dry then see what happens after use.

 

The rust under the car in your pics is mainly surface rust, so catastrophic failure of any part is unlikely due to rust.

 

The rust on the CAT is pretty normal for a car used on UK roads for a few winters.

 

The slight knock that now has go away could be a sign of wear in the knuckle, again not catastrophic but if you are worried take it to someone who can check it.

 

If it has caused slack in the steering, ie some movement of the steering wheel required before the car responds get it investigated soon.

 

Until you are happy with the car take it easy.

Re the first pic.......

 

Brake fluid will have leaked at some point removing the paint, almost certainly when the lid of the reservoir has been off, or if over filled and the brakes used hard it can overflow/be forced out under pressure. Worth keeping an eye on as Jamie has said but 90+% its an old war wound! an unfortunate blemish but nothing to worry about.

Thanks for clearing things up. I'm pretty fussy about my cars so I guess I nitpick at a lot of things :p

 

I will keep an eye on the brake fluid reservoir. I did spray some Silicone Lube on the orange stain and it went away.

 

I can't feel any slack in the steering its pretty responsive. It's just I noticed a very faint knock or jerk from the steering when I turn it. I didn't feel it after lubbing it but I will keep an eye on it.

 

Btw, what's a knuckle? :blush:

To the posted above me, I didn't spray it on everything lol just on the rusty bits of the knuckle and parts of the drive shaft(?) to try to lubricate any moving parts and also to try to remove/prevent further rust.

 

Don't know if that helps lol but I noticed most of the surface rust dissapear when I spray silicone lube on it.

Seriously, it's normal for something that old that's been used in the UK a bit to have some rust. The servo rust under the master cylinder, is due to either brake fluid being spilt when topping up the reservoir, or the cylinder itself weeping fluid. It strips many sorts of paint, and attracts water, so rust starts. Just keep an eye on the fluid level, it should drop slowly as the pads wear, but never drop below the minimum marker line.
