Fordingbridge is not bad.

There is a good pub just by the bridge that serves very good quality food......Pretty too, looking over the river Avon

Just up the road at Godshill is the Sandy balls holiday park, They have wooden chalet type places amongst the forrest......

Haven't been there for a couple of years though. They do have a website, http://www.sandy-balls.co.uk/

Brockenhurst then. Can get there on the waterloo train line

Lyndhurst few miles away

Hotels

http://www.careysmanor.com/ - cracking spa there

http://www.thatched-cottage.co.uk/ Ok not a log cabin, but probably as close as you'll get.

There's a nice few pubs around there too, Beaulieu is only a 10 minute drive from there. You can also hire out mountain bikes and get real muddy going for a ride.

Used to go to college in Brockenhurst, quite a nice place I think.

I live on the edge of the new forest. Took the aristo for a potter round on Sunday. Good job I was pottering as there was a huge speed trap sting that looked like it had knicked every single car that had passed that way :D http://www.newforestdot.com/ this is the one I'd seen online before. Looks quite smart and is just off the major route through so easy to find. Fordingbridge is quite a quaint little town as well. Certainly its not isolated in the heart of the forest if thats what you desire but its conveniently located and looks quite plush.

Looking at its location its next door to the sandy balls site and in walking distance of the fighting cocks pub which does good food and has a very good kids playing area, plenty of parking too.

A bit more commercial but more budget friendly http://www.hoseasons.co.uk/Webpages/UKPark/ProductDetailPage.aspx?ISDLNK=1&SCODE=VILG&ACODE=LP2700&TIDPDUKPARK=accommodationInfo&ISPKMD=false#

No dude it was an on foot, multiple vans and cars and bikes. All of Hampshires mobile police force was there by the looks of it. As you come off at the shell garage at the top of poulner hill and head Burley way theres a straight about 3/4 mile long. You could see the dayglo jackets bobbing around in the distance. Noob in a merc in front of me went shooting off in front of me. I just trundled up the road. He got waved into the carpark where what looked like every car that passes that way in an hour were parked up getting done. The amount of police there would suggest they were doing complete vehicle checks as well.

Spent thee days there last year, but can't recall what the place was called, but had horses roaming free either side of the road, a beautiful mill on the river just down the road, and the local pub has a really good restraint, thoroughly enjoyed driving around looking at various towns and villages.

Visited an Otter sanctuary, and the Sammy miller motorcycle museum, among others.
