Sorry about the read>

Interesting and potentaily worrying story i have followed for a week. First saw it 4th nov [iirc]

a large number of people have been infected by an epidemic, cases in Ukraine have quadrupled to over 1 million and the reported fatalities have grown from 30 to 189. The clinical presentation of 90 of the fatalities was classical H1N1 linked hemorrhagic pneumonia, which led to the "total destruction" of both lungs. These fatal cases were hospitalized 3-7 days after disease onset, highlighting the rapid progression of the infection in a large number of patients, suggesting genetic changes in the H1N1 virus.

With a paarallel outbreak in belarus.

Samples sent to WHO last week have been tested, but the results have been delayed, sparking fears of mutation in the RNA.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Thats one hell of a spread, And still it is not certain what it actually is. i know their healthcare is nowhere near as good as ours, but the figures are staggering. And there are alot of seemingly healthy people dying, 20-40 y/o being the largest bracket. Lets hope it hasn't mutated into a more viralent strain.

I think i may get my gas mask outta the attic.

Thorin i agree it hasnt been covered much in the western media, but those figures are official ukraine govt figures bud. Dont be so sceptical

so you are far off the mark, in thinking this is a crackpots work.

The silence of te big media, is what makes this so strange

I don't speak Ukrainian, so have no idea how to interpret those figures, or in what context they are given.

I'll stick with the crackpot theory for now.

According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the country has now recorded more than 250 000 cases of influenza-like illness, with 235 patients requiring intensive care. As of 2 November, 70 deaths from acute respiratory illness have been reported.

There's quite a difference in figures there. Who do I believe, a single guy with questionable credibility, or the World Health Organisation and Ministry of Health for Ukraine?

The Ukrainian health minister Vasyl Knyazevych has asked the media only to report the comments of medical experts following a series of misleading reports which fuelled public anxiety.

On national television, he said Ukraine had the same problems as the rest of the world.

Sensationalist reporting? Surely not ;)

To put this in perspective I believe the UK has had ~30 deaths this year related to Swine flu alone (i.e. not taking into account other flu strains), the Ukraine is a big country.

I agree. I just put other articles up, to show it wasnt the imagination of one site, i dont necessarily agree with the views of them. Sensasionalist [ all news generally is] or not, it's happing, thats all i wanted to highlight.

I agree it is a big country, but the spread is far more agressive than anything we have seen since. the uk death toll is 154 i think

All of it. I used to know a family of Ukrainians, they'd always got something, a cold, flu, measles, someone else's property....

:D

the elections are in january, could be political, but the figures are v high.

Strange that none of this has been mentioned in any major news papers\media.

This is by no mean small outbreak is 54,000 have been put in hospital and 160 Odd are dead!

thats what suprised me, i thought there would of been more of a mention. Perhaps it's nothing, perhaps it's something, i guess only time will tell. As it develops

Lets hope they have got their stats wrong! Not even a small mention in the western world, have we been censored again?
