DODGYDODDS
Sorry about the read> Interesting and potentaily worrying story i have followed for a week. First saw it 4th nov [iirc] a large number of people have been infected by an epidemic, cases in Ukraine have quadrupled to over 1 million and the reported fatalities have grown from 30 to 189. The clinical presentation of 90 of the fatalities was classical H1N1 linked hemorrhagic pneumonia, which led to the "total destruction" of both lungs. These fatal cases were hospitalized 3-7 days after disease onset, highlighting the rapid progression of the infection in a large number of patients, suggesting genetic changes in the H1N1 virus. http://www.recombinomics.com/News/11090906/Ukraine_WHO_SS.html Since the story broke (29th oct) the spread has been truley staggering now @: 1,122,188 Influenza/ARI 57,286 Hospitalized 189 Deaths 2nd nov 255516 Influenza/ARI 15810 Hospital Admissions 235 Intensive Care 70 deaths November 4, 2009 478,456 Influenza/ARI 24,003 Hospitalized 60 Ventilators 81 Deaths November 6, 2009 871,037 Influenza/ARI Cases 39,603 Hospitalized 135 Deaths November 8, 2009 936,804 Influenza/ARI 43,762 Hospitalized 144 Deaths November 9, 2009 1,031,597 Influenza/ARI 52,742 Hospitalized 174 Dead November 10, 2009 1,122,188 Influenza/ARI 57,286 Hospitalized 189 Deaths UPDATE November 11, 2009 1,192,481 Influenza/ARI 62,462 Hospitalized 213 Dead http://www.moz.gov.ua/ua/main/press/?docID=14073 November 12, 2009 1,253,558 Influenza/ARI 65.615 Hospitalizations 239 Deaths http://www.moz.gov.ua/ua/main/press/?docID=14084 November 15, 2009 1,347,538 Influenza/ARI 73,373 Hospitalized 282 Dead http://www.moz.gov.ua/ua/main/press/?docID=14095http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=hp&hl=nl&js=y&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.moz.gov.ua%2Fua%2Fmain%2Fpress%2F%3FdocID%3D14095&sl=uk&tl=en&history_state0= With a paarallel outbreak in belarus. http://www.recombinomics.com/News/11100902/Ukraine_189_Belarus.html Samples sent to WHO last week have been tested, but the results have been delayed, sparking fears of mutation in the RNA. http://www.recombinomics.com/News/11090908/Ukraine_WHO_Timeline.html ------------------------------------------------------------- Thats one hell of a spread, And still it is not certain what it actually is. i know their healthcare is nowhere near as good as ours, but the figures are staggering. And there are alot of seemingly healthy people dying, 20-40 y/o being the largest bracket. Lets hope it hasn't mutated into a more viralent strain. I think i may get my gas mask outta the attic. Thorin
How credible is that site, I've not read about that on any of the big news sites, and I'm thinking it's quite possibly the work of a single American crackpot going by the founder page. Thorin
1,122,188 Influenza/ARI 57,286 Hospitalized 189 Deaths According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the country has now recorded more than 250 000 cases of influenza-like illness, with 235 patients requiring intensive care. As of 2 November, 70 deaths from acute respiratory illness have been reported. There's quite a difference in figures there. Who do I believe, a single guy with questionable credibility, or the World Health Organisation and Ministry of Health for Ukraine?

Thorin
The Ukrainian health minister Vasyl Knyazevych has asked the media only to report the comments of medical experts following a series of misleading reports which fuelled public anxiety. On national television, he said Ukraine had the same problems as the rest of the world. Sensationalist reporting? Surely not To put this in perspective I believe the UK has had ~30 deaths this year related to Swine flu alone (i.e. not taking into account other flu strains), the Ukraine is a big country. I just put other articles up, to show it wasnt the imagination of one site, i dont necessarily agree with the views of them. Sensasionalist [ all news generally is] or not, it's happing, thats all i wanted to highlight. I agree it is a big country, but the spread is far more agressive than anything we have seen since. the uk death toll is 154 i think

Soop Dogg
I particularly like the line 'a large number of people have been infected by an epidemic'. Ermm....if a large number hadn't been infected by it, it wouldn't be an epidemic, would it? The statement isn't even grammatically right - did Gordon Brown write it, by any chance?
