Gilham007
Was out in my 96 manual J spec TT yesterday, drove about 15 - 20 miles mostly around town so was not thrashing it. Pulled up outside my mates house and when I got out the car I heard a funny noise coming from the front of the car. Lifted the bonnet and it sounded like the water was boiling in the radiator which I have not heard before. The temp gauge was the same as normal about half way and there was no water leaking any where. Is this normal or do I have a problem? Branners
I found on my import that after a reasonable drive I used to hear bubbling from the overflow, turned out the rad cap was knackered, so you may want to get that checked. Gilham007
When I drove home the same night, pushed it more and it seemed ok. I think I have a new cap on it as they replaced it when I bought it which was August. Is there a way of testing it.
Mark Ayling
Are you sure the noise coming from the radiator? It couldn't be that carbon filter thing could it? See here for what I'm on about: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=94 or here: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=
Gilham007
It was coming from the radiator, and sounded like boiling water. Could not here any buzzing or air coming from anywhere. Normally there is no other noise thats why I reconised the noise.
as5606
Don't want to over complicate matters and you need to check all the obvious stuff first but I had this when I was running too lean on fuel when on a long journey. Car was bubbling and the overflow pipe was spurting. Turned up the fuel on the S-AFC and all was well.
lee_kelsey
I have been told that this is normally due to one of two reasons, a problem with the Rad, normally a duff Rad Cap, or something a little more serious, a knackered head gasket or similar! Gilham007
I have had a new cap or so the garage said when I bought it, If the head gasket had gone surely there are other symptons like over heating as well as getting you can see white gunk in your oil. This was from my Renault 5 turbo so could be different in something a lot more complicated like a supra. How can I tel if the rad cap has gone ? lee_kelsey
Not sure about how to check whether the Rad Cap has gone or not, but I think you should also be getting smoke from the exhaust if your BHG was leaking!
Guest Terry S
Rad Cap.
Adam W
BHG can cause oil and coolant to mix, but more common on the supras (mk3's and 4's noth do this when they go) is that the coolant passage blows into the combustion chamber. Your oil isn't contaminated with white gunk, but you'll lose lots of coolant, overheat, and blow white smoke out the exhaust. Sounds more like a problem with the coolant system to me. A rad cap is about £3, change that even though the garage said they'd changed it. It's the most likely culprit and the cheapest thing to eliminate. Gilham007
Thanks for the advice I will buy a new rad cap. Next question is can I get one from a main dealer or can anyone recommend somewhere else. All new to this and don't know of many places to get parts from. I spoke to the bloke who owns Torque IC in ashford and he said he can service etc has anyone used them before. Just one more question I have a hks turbo timer but because of the new alarm I had fitted I can not use it as the alarm does not arm with the engine running. Is it worth having havng this done or do they not make a difference.
Supra Pilot
Radi caps are all pressure rated for different vehicles. Make sure you get the correct one...... Another thing, if you are not really losing water it maybe your radiator is blocked up!
Gordon F
And check out Matt's post from last week. Make sure you ain't full up with leaves!!
Gordon F
Sorry- link doesn't work....here's the post... Overheating caused by yesterdays weather Whilst driving to Elvington yesterday, I was happily driving uo the M1 at a steady 3,500 rpm when I happened to notice that my temp gauge was starting to climb. It continued to climb until the needle was just under the red mark by which time I had both slowed to about 2,000 rpm and turned the heater on to maximum, and the temp went almost back to the middle although visably fluctuating a bit. I stopped at the next service station to discover that my front air intake, that has a mesh grille covering it, was completely covered/full of leaves, twigs and branches! After scooping out all the debris, I carried on up the motorway with no problems. All back to normal. It's obvious when you think about it, but worth remembering if you have to drive in these conditions, to pull over every now and then to check the front intake. Considering what happened to other people driving yesterday, I got off very lightly.
Steve Cargill
Terry, have you used any water at all? Is the expansion tank still at normal level. Also take the rad cap off when cold and check that it's full to the top. When it's gurgelling carefully pull the top of the expansion tank off and see if it's blowing steam out of the pipe rather than sucking water back in. If you drive HARD for a few minutes does the temp move from 1/2 way at all? How long does it take to get to normal temperature? What colour is the coolant in the expansion tank? Alex
Could be worth flushinng the coolant to see how dirty it is in there...could be a slight blockage...how many miles has it done?
Dragonball
Had the same thing one evening after a good thrash Basically pipe into overflow blowing bubbles - so topped up and tightened cap Nothing further heard I wouldn't worry too much Paul:cool:
Gilham007
Cheers for the advice, The car has only done 49 000 miles, and was supposed to have been serviced before I bought it. I might have a look at the leaves as I live out in the sticks which is full of leaves etc. Not to sound stupid but where is the expansion tank as I have no clue about mechanics at all. Right at the front inbetween the bonnet prop and the nosecone (non-technical locators there ). It is a white plastic bottle with two pipes connected to the cap.
