Ythomit
I've been running my jp import for 3 years with no problems other than replacing the front shockers (£275 ) I was running at about 120 and realized that the noise was greater than usual (I normally have music on so tend not to hear the car). It was a deep roar so I began to slow down and look for a layby. When I got to about 70 I realized it was actually a thumping. It was clearest at 60 at around 5 or 6 thumps a second. At 50 it disappeared but returned whenever I increased speed to 60+ It seems to come from the middle of the car although I can't be sure. Any ideas ? bigbloodyturbo
if the knocking gets worse when you lift off and start slowing down then check your wheel nuts. I got vibration at speed and very noticable thumping when slowing down (foot off the throttle) and it was my nuts
Ythomit
Thanks BBT. I thought you were on to it there as Last week I had the wheels done up and I thought the buggers hadn't tightened the nuts properly. Sadly, on maybe not so sadly the wheels are all solidly bolted on.
rick001
Could be a big end issue - post up a vid with the noise if poss, hope you get it sorted
Max Headroom
Is it a thumping noise or a tapping noise? As said before could be a big end issue.
pistonbroke
Ok, easy way to see if it's engine or drivetrain related. Get to the speed where the noise occurs and depress the clutch (or put it in N for auto), if the noise stops, it's engine related, if it continues, its not your engine. It sounds to me like it's road speed related, and more than likely something to do with the prop shaft. You might have run something over and it's wrapped around the prop. dr_jekyll
flat spotted tyres? or uneven wear fron your previous suspension can cause noises.
Jake
I'd check your propshaft centre bearing and the rear gearbox mount. You probably don't want to see what a broken propshaft can do if it lets go at speed.
Ythomit
Thanks to all for the suggestions. I must say it is definately a thump not a clink. It also seems to be coming from the centre of the car which does tie in with the suggestion of a prop-shaft and it's definately synchronised with the speed of the car, rather then the engine or gearbox. I'll get up at first light tomorrow and see if I can spot anything untoward with the prop Many thanks...
Paul372
i had these it was my diff, it sounded like the knocking was coming from the middle of the car but it was the diff a quick easy job to check drain out the diff oil and if there is any big bits of metal comes out with the oil and stick around the sump plug then good guess your diff is gone

edge
When i done the clutch on my tt (original by the looks of it) all the prop bolts could be undone with a finger! Just lay underneath with a few spanners and just go round everything. If you got deep sockets also do the subframe bolts (tight)
Ythomit
Hmmm... Couldn't see anything so decided to ask my friendly mechanic to take a look. What he found tied in with another thing I've noticed. That being, the rear end instability in the wet. I know this exists anyway, if you're over zealous with the throttle, but the last 2 weeks have been worse than normal. You've guessed it? The NS, rear brakes cals are locked. I can't believe I didn't feel it at start-up and when braking. Anyway, thanks for all your help. I hope to be back on the road on Monday
Ythomit
Back on the road.... £800 later...
Dnk
Back on the road.... £800 later... £800 to fix a siezed caliper ? i hope not and youve paid for other work to be done and included that in the cost. You can buy brand new uk spec calipers discs pads etc for both rears and fit them and have lots of change.
Ythomit
It's an import, and the disc was damaged also. I ended up paying £720 for 2 discs and 2 calipers and £75 for labour. A few months ago it cost me £125 per rear shocker + £50 labour

Ythomit
Ouch! It should have cost you alot less than that. I was quoted a lower price when I complained and was told that I could have £200 off if I went for lower spec parts (which I didn't want to do). Was I ripped off or just paying for the best ? Ythomit
I've just checked with Toyota in Bury St Edmunds. They quote the following for the parts: Rear Calipers: £285 each Rear Discs: £57 each Pads: £47 per set Not good, but I don't think my local guy is ripping me off thankfully

Dnk
Mate you can get the calipers lots cheaper than that and for uk spec. UK spec rear calipers are sub £200 each, i bought a complete uk spec set up front and rear, brand new from Toyota inc discs, calipers, pads etc etc for £1200

Lbm
I understand from Toyota that the UK spec calipers would not be suitable for the JP import version that I have. Not quite true. I have full UK spec brake set up on my import. I think one or two things had to be trimmed to make room, however, it is a very popular mod for the J-spec
Dnk
I understand from Toyota that the UK spec calipers would not be suitable for the JP import version that I have. A few mods required that obviously Toyota wont do or even know about. The biggest being 17" uk spec wheels as i dont think the j spec wheels clear the uk spec front brakes. In future for o/e Toyota parts call Steve Manley at Inchcape Toyota in Oxford 01865 291 333, you'll get the best discount as far as buying from Toyota is concerned.
