JohnA
I see these 'thumbnails' inserted on people's posts, are they meant to save bandwidth? How do they work anyway? I've seen no such facility here, just 'insert image' or 'insert link'
Bobbeh
You mean picture attachments? Thats under the main body of your post reply box. uses server bandwidth and resource, best hosting externally.
JohnA
Aha, so these are uploaded and hosted by the Supra site eh? So if I post pics hosted elsewhere I'm helping the site then (save the whales, hug a tree etc...)
Bobbeh
Indeed Then again you pay your money so host however you want
Jake
So if I post pics hosted elsewhere I'm helping the site then ISTR Mawby saying that we don't use our bandwidth allocation anyway, so it doesn't really matter. Although having said that I always link to pics to http://www.imageshack.us
JohnA
Basic question perhaps, but what is "ISTR Mawby"? I've seen posts by 'Mawby' in the FAQs, written by others though. Is he an admin or something?
Supragal
Mawby is indeed one of us Supermods. And yes it does save us bandwidth if you img link from imageshack etc, the less stuff there is hosted by us the quicker the forum will be

Jake
Basic question perhaps, but what is "ISTR Mawby"?Sorry John, ISTR = "I Seem To Recall". It's quite a common Net abbreviation. I'm surprised an old hand like you isn't aware of it. (Hope that doesn't sound patronizing) Mawby= Lee Mawby, the moderator.
Digsy
Just to play devils advocate, if you link to a massive image it kinda messes up the loading of the thread - especially if the image is wider than the majority of the text. If you upload the file, then yes it uses bandwidth from the server but at least you can choose which pics to actually want to look at, plus they won't ever get ost unless a prune is required. You can also read the thread while the images you want to see load in a separate window. I'm a big fan of attaching files and images. Not everyone has broadband (yet)
