Smallshinyant
Hi all, Question from a nervouse but willing DIY'er. First up the car. N/A auto. Just passed its mot and had a oil and filter service. But recently it started squeeling, its not loud like im used to with cars with slipping fan belts and does not get any louder when i revs on the engine, infact it seems the noise goes away when i put some revs on(or maybe hiding behind the noise). Just thought while typing that it could be because the tensioner comes into play. anyway, could it be the fan belt and if it is this is it an easy'ish job to change? Apreciate anybodys help or guidance before checking it in with a garage.
Scooter
You should check the crank pulley isn't slipping/worn/perished... You can slip the belt off easily and then start the car without it and run it (briefly!) to see if the noise goes........
bradleyh_15
mine had a noise like what ur describing but mine is a manual and I drove to newquay and the crank shaft pully went! so might be worth checking!

Smallshinyant
OK so im being slowed down a bit by a complete lack of tools. ok so i found my adjustable spanner. I have marked up the pulley using the tipex method(tippex=nail varnish :-\) but will take her down to a friends later to get the belt taken off so i can check for noise with the belt off. Looks like i might need a belt anyway, are these easy to get?

Both pulley and aux belt can easily be sourced from Toyota, or people like Garage Whifbitz (www.whifbitz.co.uk) or AFR (http://www.afrtuning.co.uk/) or Lee P on here may be able to assist (he's in west sussex somewhere) Aux belt around £65-70 iirc, pulley £150+ - buy an OEM pulley rather than a solid one (no damper ring) if you are replacing it. mellonman
I seem to have a similar problem with mine but would just like to check on what people have to say till i get home and pull off the aux belt to check, mine is more of droned squeel (maybe not belt noise). it happens as soon as i start the car cold or warm for about 1 second then stops, when i pull away from stand still for about 1 second, seems to be worse when steering is full lock.
