Toyota Celica-overheating

alrighty,

im living in Australia just now and bought a car today as a run around

1990 2.2 celica 5 speed manual

everything seemed to be going great until i almost reached the house, noticed the temp gauge was almost in the red.... during the trip i noticed it move from half to 3/4s then it settled back down to half again.

i turned the car off and opened the bonnet, there was some water coming from the tube that comes from the radiator (same setup as the supra) when i turned the car back on it was still hot but no movement from the fan. i also have no hot air from my vents.

could this be the water pump? or thermostats? and is there any other possibilities and is there any easy way of checking before i pay out the teeth for a garage.

as i said i just bought the car today, didnt take out a warranty because im not staying for long, the guy at the garage was a bit of a wank so i doubt ill have a leg to stand on if i was to take it back.

cheers

Mark

Is there much coolant in the system?

My first guess would be an airlock in the cooling system. This will 1) prevent coolant from circulating properly, thus causing overheating, and 2) could prevent hot air from getting into the cabin. Could also be the water pump, but the symptoms of that are usually coolant loss in my limited experience.

A was hoping it would be somthing like that, where are the thermostats and where is the bleed point.could u talk me through it only ever done it to a Saxo, not sure if I done it right

cheers for the replys

You wont find bleed nipples etc.... its a case of running it up with the rad cap off and heaters on until the fans cut in, but it doesnt always work in my experience. NA supra's i find are much easier to do by filling the system back down the top hose

I have yet to work on a 2.2 celica but the 2.0 3S engined cars had thermostat on drivers side behind alternator
