penguin
Logged on to my online account yesterday and noticed a few transactions abroad, few hundred quid taken out in Canada!! if you live in high wycombe, AVOID paying using a debit/credit card at shell in Loudwater OR shell in Cressex. Lesson learned: ALWAYS pay using cash!
Blackie
I had mine cloned once, Half my savings went. Thats £4.98 i'm never going to see again. On a serious note, bad luck chap. I'm sure the bank will give it back quickly.

Yup there was a documentary on it a few years back. They make so much they need an electronic note counter to count the notes as it takes them to long to count it manually and bag it up. penguin
I'm with lloyds, i got talking to someone on the blower and she said the money would be refunded to me in full + transaction charges within a week. said i just had to sign a document she was sending through the post..... the inconvenience is the biggest problem, i only have one debit card as i live by the motto "don't spend what you don't have" - but i was fortunate enough to take out the maximum limit allowed before the card go blocked .... hoping the new one will be here asap... kjgreen3
Wow, Really surprised to see how many people on here have been a target of ID theft, Ive been stung twice the most recent a few months back they activated 2 unauthorised D.Debits to Orange and Carphone Warehouse, (some thieves have NO taste!) got my money back but the bank refused to refund the going overdrawn charge. Ah well but it has since forced me to lock down that account (its not 1st choice account) so only appearing in person will get you your money out, just like the good old days. Anyone seeing watchdog yesterday take note about using unsecure wireless networks whilst out and about, basically ID fraudsters sit about (eg internet cafe or starbucks etc) hijacking user email logins. From which they can gather enough info to get credit cards out in your name which is much more difficult to prove that you are not to blame. You have been warned, Oh anyone got any credit card cloning machines the last one I left with a mate who works at shell

stevie_b
Penguin: did you pay at the pump or at the till? I always pay at the till (I'm just old-fashioned like that), but the payment process at my local petrol station doesn't seem susceptible to cloning. The card is always on the customer's side of the counter (because that's where the card reader is). I don't know what info is needed in order to clone a card assuming you can't swipe it through a cloner (and I don't expect anyone to tell me!), but I guess it's the long number plus the 3 digits on the back. Unless the till displays these numbers to the till attendant (who then writes them down), I don't see where the weak point is. Maybe dodgy chip and pin machines have been used? AlanM
I had £3200 taken out of my CC account last year in the states. Got it back but took a wee while to sort out
charlton
There's only so much you can do to avoid it, I like to think I'm quite careful but there are times when you need to use your card. I've been done twice but luckily no money was taken as HSBC have denied the transactions (not because of lack of funds) I got a call once asking if I was in the USA then in Jamaica an hour later and then in Wetherspoons in Surrey between those times - I had to confess the charges from Wetherspoons were me
patrikbrunt
must be a bad week for it, ive had just over £500 spent on my card last week without my knowledge. Luckily one company phoned me up to verify if id tried to set up an account and make some purchases which alerted me to the issue, couldve fleeced me for thousands. hope i get it back without too much hassle
Kevan
It has been a problem with Shell garages in particular, so much so that for a while last year (or the year before) they stopped accepting chip and pin cards for a while. The intercept was by using a modified card reader so it didn't matter that you never let your card out of your sight. I thought they'd got their act together but obviously not. K. johnny g
i always pay at the pump if i can but at these two you have to use the chip/pin reader. Yep, if I can't Pay@Pump then I pay cash. Don't trust garages at all.
penguin
i'm surprised the big card schemes have not given shell a good battering considering they are pushing everyone towards PciDss

Mine got cloned at a Shell garage about 18mths ago, I e-mailed senior managers at Shell, they ignored repeated e-mails and then finally replied pretty much saying that they were sorting the problem and my losses were covered anyway!! The problem is that I was about to do a large transaction on my debit card and could only use that, the delay in getting a new one cost me over £100 but even after explaining that Shell still didn't give a sh*t.
