Rear Suspension -- Replace?

Just wondering if you replace the whole suspension (arms, tie rods etc) or just replace the bushes

 

  • are the rear arms similar to the front, you need to buy the arm to replace the ball joint
  • I have poly bushes on the front if I get all new components on the rear and leave the rubber bushes , will these last long?
  • Does anybody have a comprehesive list of what components to replace?
  • I was thinking Ikeya Formula but I heard the rose joints will need to be replaced frequently? I say sourcing the rose joints will be an issue

Rod ends (Rose is a TM name, a rod end is the generic name) and spherical bearings tend to be standardised sizes, so you should be able to buy high quality replacements for the junk that comes in 90% of Japanese suspension kits. There was a list with part numbers on the forum, I think Nic may have posted it. You need to replace the whole arms. poly bushings in some of the arms are a downgrade to the rubber sealed sphericals that Toyota fit as stock (rear top arms for example, which are CRITICAL to rear end stability.

hmmm think it would just be easier fitting all OEM arms.

9 times out of 10 the ball joints are shot to hell and need replacing anyway. Just a shame there so damn expensive! Think its something like £100+ an arm i think and theres 8 to replace so your heading for a grand already! :blink:

There are 4 lower and 4 upper arms or wishbones with ball joints, the rest are straight forward arms with just bushes.

 

I changed pretty much most of the parts including new eccentric adjusters all the nuts and bolts washers etc and the bill was over £1600 for the parts alone.

That was through Steve Manley at Toyota and included a chunk of discount and think retail would have been nearer £2000.

 

 

The wishbones are the expensive parts and these prices were over a year ago !

lol i just clocked that! i meant 8 not 18!!!

 

i was just referring to those with ball joints. My mr-t will do me mine for a combined total of £1100 so it isnt such a big hit to wallet although i wont deny there HUGELY expensive :blink:

£1100 for the 8 wishbones is a very good price, or is that + vat ?

no thats delivered to me! could be the fact that ive known him for many many years now and we have a good partnership, he sorts me out i sort him out :) to anyone else though they would cost more :D

 

ill be replacing track arms and arb drop links and bushes before hand so see what he can do me them for. Probly go the full distance and get wheel bearings and just totaly overhaul everything

It's expensive but worthwhile. I was warned off polybushes by Mr Wilson, and then SCA (the place who did the work) said it'd have cost about the same due to the increased labour plus replacement parts for what had to be cut off due to being seized. And that's on a 1996 car that's been garaged all its life.

I got the front done a few weeks back with the poly bushes and one lower arm swapped out due to knackered ball joint(Like majority of people dont have the $$ to get everything at once :( ). I will just replace the rear with all new OEM components, on a side note I was expecting more response, noise, harsh ride with poly bushes but she seems less responsive, unpredictable, lack of steering feedback and you feel detached (not in full control).

Before I changed them she felt alot better compared to what I am experiancing now, maybe the renewed front accelerated the wear on the rear components

 

 

Your write sums up how she feels to drive, not very fun at the moment and when I got her aligned a few weeks back , not too sure what they did but must of put more positive camber on, she understeers something shocking now

Do you have a printout or any info on how they set your car up ?

Well one reason I bit the bullet and replaced the lot was because you never knew what else would be the next weak link in the chain. Changing the fronts only has probably highlighted that the back ones really need doing as well.
