My First Track day

This is a long post I know, but I though some of you may be interested to hear my problems with noise and the unusual cause !

------------

I recently met MrT at the Goodwood Revival and had a great day there watching some brilliant racing round the really nice, fast track - great day, recommend it !

Whilst there we both commented that it would be great track to put the Supra's round.

Andy phoned me a couple of weeks ago to say there was a couple of places at a track day there and did I want to go ?

I declined at first (due to cost and not wanting to crash my car and die) but later changed my mind and we did it yesterday.

Brilliant day... :D

Very small meet with I would guess only about 25/30 cars there ( a mixture with Golf's, Alfa's, BMW's and some more exotic stuff) and very relaxed (although I wasn't, as it was a mixture of fog, mist and light rain).

Sound test first, Andy was fine but my guys just laughted at my 105 dbls (strict limit 98) so I popped by unused baffle in and tried again - 95 (I think) so I got my sticker. :)

Us "newbies" were driven round the track by Goodwoods chief instructor in a big 4x4 (max 60 MPH) and he pointed out the braking points etc etc.

Then came our turn to (nip to the loo - nerves telling) and take our place in the pit lane.

Even in the wet the first steadyish lap the car handled really well and the track was beautiful  smooth, wide & slightly undulating with a nice long back straight

Through round the last bend and ready to start to pick it up when I was red flagged and asked to "pull up over there please"

They said I had triggered the three trackside noise monitors and was reading 105 dbls which should really mean no second chance !

After a while an instructor jumped in with me and we did a circuit with him pointing out where they were situated and where to back right off ! I was OK if I was sensible...

I couldn't understand this at all as the baffle was still in place, but when I got back to the pits a number of people rolled up to ask what I had under the bonnet, as it sounded like a jet fighter at take off when I hit the throttle

Andy was back by then and confirmed that he's never heard anything like it (except at Castle Combe two years ago on a Supe) and it sounded like a rocket !

He'd had a couple of goes by now (15 minute sessions) and was smiling lots and having great fun.

We both went out for another session, with me getting red flagged and brought in for another "word" !

I had been backing off at the boxes, but had scored 106 on the hand held device as I was passing the pits - not good, no more chances

After some grovelling and explaining that it was the baffle causing the problem (don't think they belived me) they gave me "one last chance" and I did another few sessions at half throttle on half the track with a quick noisy blast from the top corner down the back straight.

Frustrating but better than just watching.

The track was drying out slowly in the afternoon and we were both getting more confident round the corners and could get up to about 130 on the back straight before braking hard for the last corner.

We both really loved it... brilliant day - recommend it

I just can't wait for another go, and they do run 105 dbl days so no baffle (if I can ever get it out now) :(

Hope Andy will add his thoughts to the thread, he's just text to say he's worked out his MPG for the track time - 9.8 MPG !

My set up is full BPU with no cats & an RSR zaust, although with the baffle in I could only manage .7 BAR max :(

Next time..... :eyebrows:

PS. Many thanks Andy mate for your encouragement & help yesterday.

Well done Gerry & Andy. Don't know why you've never done it before :)

So what's the diagnosis on the noise? Is it the baffle causing the noise? Mine makes a bit of a weird noise at WOT with it in (a sort of loud wooshing sound.

Definitely recommend airfield days to gain confidence as there's not much to hit and they're relatively cheap. For real tracks, Rockingham Raceway was awesome when I went with The Nums, SteveR, Ark & Mrs Ark and co earlier in the year :D

Up for the next Llandow day?

I remember that Supra at Castle Coombe with the baffle in it, did indeed sound like a rocket (weird and horrible noise).

If you're going to get hooked, get a quieter exhaust (like a Tanabe Touring Medallion) to save you having to back off and worry about noise limits. I hope you are hooked, it'd be nice to have some more track day regulars. :)

Well, what a great track day at Goodwood circuit on Sat with Gerry.:)

Was my first time on track in the Supra. Once the nerves had calmed down at the begining (wet track in morning did not help!) I was really enjoying it. The car feels so good when driven on a lovely smooth fast circuit. Done a total of 44 laps which is 105 miles on the day,:D. I felt sorry for Gerry as his car could not be driven to the full, for fear off going over the noise limit:( I tried to tell the marshalls that it was the baffle that was making the noise to load when driven hard, but they would not let him take it out as the car needed it in to pass the static noise test, which seems a bit silly as you are driving all day and not parked up reving the nuts off it. But rules are rules:(

That to one side, I would deffinatly do another track day.:)

Here's a couple of pics of the day and Gerry ( Ex Gatso) on track. Note: the marshall on the left ready with the black flag to catch that noisy little devel called Gerry!:D;)

Isn't Goodwood the best circuit? My Supra loved that track.

It was 98db when I was there though, they've obviously opened things up a bit now :)

Depends on the day, the company who we went with have two types, 10 car days at 98 dbls and 5 car days at 105 dbls.

* 10 car / 5 car is the number of cars on track at the same time.

Gerry, have you checked for an exhaust blow yet? I had similar noises at Snetterton the other week (noisy day, so no problems with that) and it turned out the downpipe was loose. If you stuck a baffle in there, the increased backpressure might increase the size of the blow, increasing the noise...

Good thinking...

I assumed it was just the increased pressure being forced out of a smaller exhaust hole.

I'll have a good listen all round this week sometime.

I'll also see if I can get it on vid before I take the baffle out.

Cheers
