TonyP
Comic Jimmy Carr has divided opinion in Northern Ireland with his joke about servicemen amputees. The stand up comic and television host sparked a furore after he told an audience of 2,500 at the Manchester Apollo: “Say what you like about servicemen amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan, but we're going to have a f*****g good paralympic team in 2012.” Full story I don't usually have a problem with jokes about anything and if I'd been in the audience i probably would have laughed along. But reading it now I think he's crossed the line with that one.
michael
When this was first reported (last week?) they interviewed an amputee serviceman who said it was absolutely spot on for a soldiers sense of humour as well as being accurate due to some ex-service types already having beaten various world records since losing limbs. There isn't a line to cross unless you draw it yourself, we all have different pens, in the case of your link they found a chap with a certain type to suit their agenda. RedM
Carr has already apologised and is doing a free show for some army types.

Well said. I don't find the comment insulting at all, it's basically saying yeah they might have a disability, but they're still awesome individuals
Ewen
I've got more of an issue with Jimmy Carr being described as a comedian. Irritating little shit that he is.

I have to agree, he was the same as a kid, his mum and mine are best of friends.
martini
I used to rate him, but I am more into Lee Mack, Frankie Boyle and Ricky Gervais these days.
SupraGirlie
I went to see Rapier wit at the Brighton Dome the other day, I remember that joke. To be honest, it was no where NEAR as bad as a lot of the other jokes! However the show as a whole, was pretty much a repeat of last years, no new material as such. He tends to stick to the same subjects.
Shadow Beast
Agree with Michael on this one, it suits the dark sense of humour us squaddies have, no harm done, IMO Richie
stupra
A friend of mine in a wheelchair recently joined a gym, when he asked for a discount, (I think he said he asked for 50%), the guy asked why he thought he was entitled to that. His reply was, "Well I'm only going to use half the stuff ain't I ?". The guy then asked if he was ex Force's, to which he said "no, whys that ?", the guy's response was, "Because you have an Army like sense of humour". I cracked up when he told me, the guy's a Star. . We in the Armed Force's, (or ex), like to take the pi$$, out of each other, and out of ourselves. The people who feel Jimmy overstepped the mark with this joke probably have no reason to feel offended by it. A Soldier may lose an arm or a leg, (maybe more), but they don't lose their sense of humour.

stinboy
Not sure how to feel about this one - cutting edge humour should be cutting edge. But Carr regularly enjoys his laughs by being cruel and laughing at others expense. I prefer humour to be off the cuff - wit. Not planned, not thought out, not thinking about who this will offend/make laugh at the same time. Ross Noble - give him a go, the man is a genius
Abz
His pretty crude with his jokes, we had him over on a consulting day out @Deloitte & he basically took the piss out of everyone in the audience without even cracking a smirk. Other people in the field might have found it offensive, but he cracked everyone up.

benkei
Don't you think that Carr thinks these jokes through first? I bet he comes up with some really harsh ones, which he omits form his show because thay are TOO bad. He has to know what he's doing, and his jokes are always a bit controversial. As always, it's the people who have no relation to the joke/comment/whatever that get offended, the army lads seem fine with it! So as long as the target of the joke are fine with it, then there's no issue. I'd HATE it if someone I didn't even know was going round censoring things that may possibly offend me. It's up to me to decide what I find offencive, that's the perks of being an individual - I get to decide for MYSELF!
garethr
I read that and took it as a dig at the government, not the soldiers. It causes me to think, "Yeah, plenty of money for unwinnable wars and for sporting events, not so much to look after injured servicemen.". Yeah I'm sure he does come up with lots of controversial stuff, and a lot he airs in a deadpan clever clever way. My issue i suppose is not the material but the supercilious way in which it is delivered. But I have to disagree with one point you make - how can you assume that the target of the joke is not offended by reading this thread? Surely some will.... I am not offended - but lot's of people are. I hate to repeat myself but it is the way he delivers the gag, not the gag itself that causes most grief. His stage persona is an intellectual cock who says whatever he feels. It works for him. But that's part of the joke. Personally I don't find it funny but then it's not my sense of my humour.
