What would you do?

I think that most of the people on here who say that will do this or do that upon encountering a burglar are talking sh1t. Most of em would be under the bedclothes wetting the bed and screaming for mummy. KBWs the lot of em.

No. Sorry you're wrong this time. Anyone, and I mean anyone, with family(wife/kids) in the house would fight. Even if they were the puniest person in the universe and had no chance they would fight.

so by saying this does this apply to me for sharing my experience then, or is it different as like yourself we were unlucky enough to confront an intruder, as for all you know these people could actually do what they said they would do and quite possible we could be discussing them one day.

Yes I agree with you on this point, However some may not do the above and will actually stand up for their families in the face of a violent intruder.

I would like to think I would do the same. But the reality is that NOBODY knows exactly how they would react in a given situation. You simply can't tell, until it happens.

Sorry but wrong again. I know exactly how I would react. I live alone with my daughter. I have a large piece of timber beside my bed. If I found intruders in my house in the middle of the night I would do my best to embed that piece of timber in their heads.

Seconded! (but with shotguns)

I want shotguns!!

I don't know if the more "reserved" posters in this thread have children but once you do there is no doubt in your mind before the event what you would do and there would be absolutely no hesitation during the event. Having children in your life changes everything.

What would have happened if the burglars stabbed the guy and his mother? They'd have possibly killed two innocent people and got away!

Would you allow yourself, or your family to be murdered for the sake of not getting into trouble for defending yourself? It's rediculous and the justice system is a shambles!

Killing them is a bit too far, but the story was short and lacking details. Who's to say they didn't attack him first? Who's to say that the knife didn't belong to one of the burglars, and it was wrestled from him and accidentally ended up in his gut?

We can always speculate about eventualities, and I think this helps, as situations we hadn't thought of will come up, and we can ready ourselves for them incase we find ourselves in one of them, we have thought about what we'd do before-hand, hopefully leading to the best responce for the safety of our families, and not being sued/imprissoned afterwards!

In order to plead self-defence, you need to use equal or lesser force than your assailant. In this situation having a baseball bat to hand is step one, having a kitchen knife to place in the hand of your incapacitated intruder is step two.

I know how I would (and have) reacted in these circumstances but I'm not about to discuss it in public.

Not read all the posts, but if it is as i read it, i have no sympathy for the robbers, you should'nt have to hold back in this situation if your broken into, the law should back you, not the thieves, in that situation you should'nt have YOUR hands tied.

The thieves know the laws soft, hence thats why so many of them commit crime. Really feel for the guy getting locked up for protecting his property.

No he hasn't. I 'cleaned up' for him.

DOH!

Rule 2: Always work alone, never involve anyone else as they will turn Queens on you in a heartbeat.

You also need to buy replacement clothes for the ones you wear whe you dispose of the body, so they are gone along with their evidence, but any neighbours who see you leaving the house and can describe the clothes you were wearing....well those clothes are clean and dry in your wardrobe all along.

It's already happened to me and I scared them off. Burglars are burglars. Nothing more. They want to get in, grab your stuff, and get out without any hassle. As such they tend not to be violent, they'd rather just leg it and get the hell out of there.

So in answer to your question, you make a hell of a noise, scream and scare the sh1t out of them, and 9 times out of 10 they will leave - fast!

For all you keyboard warriors out there, knives, violence - and murder - isn't necessary.

Now answer MY question.

Not getting into the argument about whether the Burgulars deserve what they get, as I side with the 'Break into a house and you're fair game' side, but they cause a load of costly damage (Window/Locks/Any other way) into whoevers property in getting in, so they technically 'owe' the residents even if nothing's nicked...

You scare them off, and there's not much chance of anyone being held to your damage, and you're a load of cash out of pocket... There should be more options for holding people...

Well I say you were the lucky one there. Burglary doesn't just entail stealing stuff from your house, it includes a whole host of other offences too. Sometimes their intent isn't just to steal stuff.

For example, take a look at this bloke (that we still haven't caught)
