AndyT
i wonder if there are any coppers in the mk4 owners club? Yep. One of our brave uniformed members is digging out the exact law on the plates as we speak. What size is your plate broomie? Import sizes are legal but we're always going to have to fight for it. SupraGirlie
That sucks, I hope this doesn't happen to me, as mine looks about the same size as yours (maybe marginally bigger) Already had 3 parking fines in the last couple of months, definitely don't want any more fines, but I hate big plates!! AndyT
From the other thread. Regulation 14A of the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 was inserted by the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) (Amendment) Regulations 2002. The amendment is designed to cater for the size and spacing of characters in the registration mark of certain imported vehicles. 14A(1) This regulation applies in relation to any vehicle imported into the United Kingdom which (a) does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval; and (b) is so constructed that the area available for the fixing of the registration plate precludes the display on the plate of a registration mark in conformity with the requirements of regulation 14. 14A(2) In relation to a vehicle to which this regulation applies - (a) each character in the registration mark must be 64 millimetres high; (b) the width of each character of the mark, other than the letter "I" and the figure "1", must be 44 millimetres; © the width of every part of the stroke forming a character in a mark must be 10 millimetres; (d) the spacing between any two characters within a group must be 10 millimetres; (e) the vertical spacing between groups of characters must be 5 millimetres; (f) the width of a margin between the mark and the top and lateral sides of the registration plate must be not less than 5 millimetres; (g) the space between the bottom of the mark and the bottom of the registration plate must be not less than 13 millimetres; but, within that space, the space between the bottom of the mark and the top of the name and postcode of the person by whom the plate was supplied must be not less than 5 millimetres. Not sure it's bang up to date though. The MOT stations were awaiting new law clarification last December.
Dave17
How very dare you! When we fine you it all goes to the bottomless money pit that our beloved prime minister is attempting to fill, and the inspectors Christmas party....
Guigsy
People seem to think that 14a applies to them because they have an import. But lets be honnest. In relation to a, There was a uk mkiv and the front bumper (registration plate wise) is exactly the same. you cant argue its an import and that it doesnt apply. And secondly regarding b) Ive never seen a bumper on supra (stock or aftermarket) where it is impossible to attach a number plate legaly. I think cars look a bit odd with very small number plates. They look wierd :S

AndyT
Here is an excellent write up from a dvla registered supplier. Craigsplates The ONLY downfall is I don't know if the bumper needs modifying to fit a UK bracket for a UK number plate. If it doesn't I don't think we can get away with an import front. hogmaw
Think about the greater good. If an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera can't read your plate cos it's not the right size, then how are the police to see if your car is speeding, taxed or insured? And how are they find or trace your car if it's been stolen? Your narcissism in having a small plate does have its cost.

The rear plate is a different matter though

The rear plate is a different matter though Yep. That's the way I read it. Shame. I've gotta get a new plate now. Trouble is Craigsplates list over a dozen legal import plate sizes so I just went with the 7 character plate thinking it was legal for me. You've really got to look to get to the exemption. Oh well. lexsum
you obviously knew it was not to standard so why the surprise at the fine? Here is a hint to avoid future fines, put on a uk standard plate.
Stephen G
The scum sorry i mean the police pulled a mate over in his vxr8 and fined him £60 for his plate being to small even though the plate was the right size for the recess on the bumper for it and it is a private number with only 2 numbers and 3 letters and was by no way a small plate. If that didnt piss him off enough a few days later he got a letter from the dvla saying if he was caught again they would take the number off him. When they stopped the mate they tried to say it was because the number plate reader in the patrol cars cant read it which is a load of c@@p as his cousin is high up in the traffic branch and was able to say you would be surprised what they can read. Just another way to get more money off drivers
