Westcoaster
An Edinburgh Biker was caught at 166 mph on a country road and has been jailed for 9months and banned for 5 years. Is that too harsh? What do you think? Story here:
Guest SupraGTE
wtf...... damn it we got caught 202kmh at a country road in Finland and my mate driving got 9 months without licence, damn the jails are full in UK then or?
The-Plethora
I think the ban is fine but jail? seems excessive. We all speed at some time or another and test the limits of the car. Yeah its putting yourself and others at risk but this guy did it on an open stretch, not as if he was roaring past a 20mph zone next to a school in the middle of an estate. benkei
They may be trying to make an example of him to deter others?
Guest SupraGTE
I fill sorry for that guy, thinking how low jail time people who sell/deal/take Drugs gets ... compared to this , that kills and annoys more people than speed i would said, that's my opinion. the Nordics countries are even worse, somebody that deals drugs gets a fine or haft to some free work for the goverment a few hours a week, but if you drive after 2 or 3 beers , then you are fu*k*d
RedM
Doing nearly three times the speed limit! F**k him.
DODGYDODDS
that is harsh, but in this country thats the risk of excesivly high speed, he should of beaten a granny instead, wouldnt of been sent down for that. justice system is laughable but needed. SupraAyf
I have never been able to understand why we have 200mph-capable bikes and a 70mph speed limit in the UK. ...........or why a new car has a 155mph limiter fitted for the UK market!! Is that to restrict the motorist from doing only 85mph over the limit.
Pot
I notice they only mention how many people have been caught speeding, and not how many speed related accidents there have been... True, 166's pretty excessive, but it must be a decent bit of road surely?
stupra
I don't agree with whole jail for speeding thing, a fine and a ban yes, but prison, no. It's OTT.

Capping it at 100 would make sense - anyone caught over that gets banned anyway.

Max Headroom
Speed makes up only 6% of the cause of accidents on UK roads!
Scott
Bit of a shame for the guy getting so much jail time, seems harsh. Is the 155 limit not something to do with the ability of modern cars with regards to open roads such as the autobahn and our ability to drive? I'm sure i read that somewhere. Basically where 70 IS the legal limit for a motorway it was set at a time where cars were shit and driving was a fairly new thing with very little experienced people. Nowadays everything has changed, from the tarmacs used to our ability to drive at speed. Might be a lot of crap, makes sense though.
Dnk
Jail is way to harsh in my opinion.
stinboy
3 times the speed limit? And a custodial sentence is harsh? I hate to say 'what if' but he is seriously putting other people in danger. We al speed from time to time but that just takes the piss - deserves everything he gets.
Gaz6002
I think the guy should have got a better lawyer!
j_jza80
Jail does seem a bit harsh, then again if he did it without considering the risks involved, he wasn't be being responsible so maybe he deserves it.
gaz1
i think the law in this country stinks, thjat sort of speed is out of order, but smoking crack while speeding and causing a death gets you 12 months, beating your partner to an inch of there life gets you 15 months, but buggering a 14yr old boy gets you 2yrs i hate this country of late

JamieP
His lawyer said he was "deeply ashamed" of the offence. I was thinking the same, 166mph is pitiful on a GSXR1000 im sure i could have gone faster:innocent:
clarky666
I think the guy should have got a better lawyer! This is the scary thing though Gaz..........Graham Walker is probably the top man for road traffic law defense in Scotland. He has got people off with a whole host of things, some high profile cases, and from person experience too as i've used him in the past. The fact the guy got this sentence WITH him defending makes it seem even more unbelievable and harsh than i had initially thought when i first heard about the conviction. £600 - £900 fine, 2-3 year ban and an extended retest to regain his license is what i'd expect for that. Unreal.

Perhaps that's the reason he was 'made an example of' though... because of his choice of lawyer?
