Chap, we'll need a few more details

it would shut of but not restart windows when turned back on

What do you mean, "not restart"? How far does it get when trying to restart? How do you know that it won't restart? Does it just sit there, or does it say that it's given up?

it says a file is missing

We'll need details of this. This is like going to the doctor and saying, "I don't feel well. Tell me what's wrong with me." :)

lol

You're a happy chappy! :) Dread to think what you're like when something good happens to you.

lol stevie b, ok when you closed the top to shut it of when reopening the laptop it started not coming back on it would get to the windows xp loading bar screen and go no further.

so i had to format\wipe everything and start again to get it to work again.

Had to do this a few times but on last attempt the reboot\format kept crashing then when turning on it now says >???

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\system32\hal.dll.

please reinstall a copy of the above file
