ScottC
As the title suggests i can't get my pc to start. If only i had bought a mac. I'm running xp on sp3. It gets to the log in screen. I then go to log in, it loads my desk top background and then gives up. I've tried logging in as different users, samething happens. I've tried starting in safe mode but when i log in i just get a black screen with safe mode in each corner. I've also tried to start with 'last known good configuration' with no joy. So now i'm stuck. If anyone can help me out so i can get this thing started i will love you for ever. Sorry for way this is written but i had to do it on my mobile
DamanC
Sounds like Its a problem with one of the Xp files. First thing to is boot from an XP CD. Go into the repair option and provided your C drive is where XP is installed type chkdsk C: /r wait an hour and then try booting

DamanC
If this goes over you head, dig out the yellow pages. An It tech should not be charging more than £50 for a fix.

The-Plethora
Scott does your mouse still move around and such or is the PC frozen? If you still have control over the PC do a CTRL+ALT+Delete to bring up task manager, then click file then click new task and type in "explorer.exe" this should hopefully launch the windows explorer enviornment (read icons and start bar). Worth a shot before you try anything else.

ScottC
OH YEAH BABY! It lives again. Thank you guys. Any ideas as to what could have caused this? Is it safe to just shut down and restart or is there something I should check before hand?
Meko
probably a driver that isn't loading properly. You could try doing a system restore to yesterday
The-Plethora
Cool, glad you sorted it, I would still make a backup of everything important though. I would run a virus checker first AVG free or Avast are pretty popular, after that I would run some spywear stuff, lots of people use adaware but I prefer spybot seach and destroy.
